Visitors arriving at the Hedonism II resort in Negril, Jamaica, aren’t typically looking for a quiet, indolent, and laid-back getaway, where they can sip alcoholic beverages while topping up their tan in the sun.
Often promoted as the “world’s best sex hotel,” the adults-only destination has been operating since 1981, offering a clothing-optional environment where guests can freely express themselves. The resort features everything from themed play spaces to educational sessions, while also allowing visitors to go nude around its pools, hot tubs, and designated beach areas.
In recent years, the experience has expanded to include a more fitness-focused element with a provocative twist. April and Scott Shirley, a couple from Alabama who run a sex-themed fitness business called Naughty Gym, have been hosting a special event at the resort since 2023 that blends wellness with open discussions about relationships and intimacy.
Scott, 53, explained that their goal is to shift the balance slightly away from constant partying. “We've tried to bring, for our workout week, a little less of a focus on the parties, even though we bring educators from all over the world to come in and talk about different sexual topics and relationship issues,” he said. “Some of them are vanilla issues about dealing with jealousy or communication, and then some of them are as X-rated as demonstrations on how to give good oral sex.”
According to April, 47, the aforementioned sessions are led by experienced professionals. “During our week, we have a sex therapist who comes in and she will have classes on how to implement better techniques. And they’ll have a person that they are demonstrating on,” she said. These workshops take place in a space known as the Kama Sutra Palace, which she described as a building filled with mattresses. “These are experts who have been doing this for years, and they show you how to think outside the box.”
The event also includes social gatherings, such as pool parties that continue late into the night. “They have an afternoon pool party, and then they have a late-night pool party that typically goes to 2am or 3am in the morning,” April noted.
Despite the resort’s reputation, Scott emphasized that guests can choose their own level of involvement. There are quieter, more private areas available for those who prefer to stay out of the more social or explicit activities. According to him, “it can be as mild or as wild as you want it to be,” and the crowd is diverse, with “every country… represented,” including visitors from the UK.
For April, part of the appeal lies in the openness of the environment. “It attracts people who are looking for a release from their everyday life, tucking in who they really are. They can come here, and they can have really open conversations,” she said.
She added that connections form quickly in that setting: “Within 5 to 10 minutes of meeting somebody there, you're going to start having a conversation that you cannot have in any other part of your life, because people are going to work and they're hiding who they really are.”
