A woman has shared the story of how she learned she was related to her boyfriend.

The TikTok user, who goes by the handle "mattilathehun" on the platform, explained in a video uploaded on Thursday, April 8, that her now-ex partner got her an ancestry DNA test for her birthday.

In the video in question, Mattila (who hails from Saskatchewan in Canada) states: "So we got the results back a month later and I was looking through the list of relatives."

She continued: "I turned to my boyfriend and I said: 'Hey this is pretty nifty, I'm related to someone who has the same name as you.'

"And that’s how I found out I was dating my cousin."

Suffice it to say that Mattila's account of the embarrassing situation has picked up a lot of attention online, accruing over 487,000 views, 86,900 reactions, and a further 480 comments from other TikTok users who wanted to share similar experiences.
