A new mom was left devastated after her aunt branded her baby's name as "weird."
Taking to Reddit's infamous 'Am I The A**hole?' thread, one woman revealed her hurt when a family member straight out insulted her for the name she picked for her child.
Opening up about how much time and thought went into deciding on a moniker for her child, she recalled an incident with her aunt that left her reeling.
"After a lot of back-and-forth, we settled on Nyxiryn (pronounced 'NIX-er-in'). It’s a combination of 'Nyx,' the Greek goddess of the night, and 'Irina,' which means 'peace' in Greek. We thought it sounded poetic, strong, and unique," the mom wrote.

She continued: "I shared the name with my family a few weeks before she was born, and the reactions were mixed. Some of them thought it was cool and different, but others were clearly taken aback. My mom said it was 'a mouthful,' and my sister-in-law was silent for a while before saying, 'Well, it’s… interesting.'"
It's giving haters to me.
Anyway, the woman then went on to open up about some "drama" that happened at a family dinner after the baby was born - and it involved her aunt who was clearly not impressed upon hearing the name.
"When I told her, she immediately burst into laughter, like a full-on cackle," she recalled. "I was taken aback and asked what was so funny, and she said, 'You seriously named your kid that? Poor child. You’ve practically cursed her with that name.'"

And it didn't stop there.
"She went on a rant about how Nyxiryn is a 'made-up, weird name' that would just make my daughter’s life harder," the hurt mom went on to say. "She said that she would be bullied in school, that no one would ever spell it right, and that we were “trying too hard” to be unique. She even went so far as to call me selfish for giving her a name like that and said I was setting her up for a life of frustration."
At this point, she snapped back defending her and her husband's name choice but was just brushed off as being "sensitive" and unable to handle "feedback."
This then led her to question whether she gave the wrong moniker to her child.
"So, AITA for naming my baby Nyxiryn and for getting upset when my aunt called me out on it?"
The response under the thread was just as mixed as the response she got from her family, but many seemed to agree with the aunt.
"You need to think about whether you're choosing a name based on your daughter's needs or based on your own desire to sound clever," wrote one user, while another added: "Your aunt is right. Your daughter will absolutely be made fun of and make it harder for her to get jobs. On top of that, it’s just a really ugly name."
A third even recalled their own experiences with a unique name, stating that it only made their life more difficult.
"I have an unconventional name and life has been hard. Less opportunities in pretty much everything and everyone judges you by your name. It’s a f****** curse," they said. "...I won’t ever fully understand the selfish motivation that parents have. No forward thinking, no awareness of what you’re child would go through."
However, this person commented: "Dude, call your kid what you want, it doesn't change the fact that no one will ever spell it right, or know how to pronounce it."
"Your aunt was out of line... [but] she's right," added another.
