Tom Hanks is one of the most successful and beloved actors in Hollywood, but he's best known as 'America's Dad'. While it would feel a little strange for most other famous actors to turn up to your family BBQ and make a few goofy dad jokes, I think we'd all be completely fine with Tom Hanks doing it.

He's very aware of this persona:

Just like any good dad, Hanks given plenty of advice over the years - and when it comes to relationships, it's easy to trust the word of a man who has been married for 31 years. In 1988, Hanks married actress Rita Wilson, and they've been happily married ever since.

Here is some of the best advice he's given over the years:

1. Meet them halfway

“I sacrificed something for my wife. Rita has Greek roots and they have the Orthodox faith. And I was a Catholic, so before getting married I converted my faith out of deep respect to her family.”

2. Don't get married before 30

“No one should get married before they’re 30,” he told the Epoch Times, no doubt referring to his first wife Samantha Lewes, who he married in 1978.

3. Love them for who they are

"This woman loved me when I was thin and loved me when I was fat. She loved me bald and loved me with hair. This woman loves me, I know that. This is why I am a lucky man.”

4. Small acts of kindness

“I view my wife as my lover, and we have a bond that goes beyond words like wife or girlfriend or mother," he told E! News. "I can’t imagine my life without her."

"I often leave notes for her near the phone or somewhere in the kitchen. I wish her a good day and stuff like that. I type notes for her using the antique typewriters that I collect — I have more than a hundred. And also, I have a habit of sending a photo report of my day to Rita. I take pictures of everything around me when she is not with me: what I eat for lunch, who I meet, what I shoot. I think she likes it."

5. Support them through thick and thin

In 2015, Wilson was diagnosed with breast cancer. While she was worried over how this would change their relationship, he continued to support and care for her. They became even closer, and eventually beat the disease.

"All I can do is bow down before the courage of my wife,"  he told E! News.

6. Find the right person for you

"My secret to a happy marriage is just being married to the right woman," he told People Magazine. "I got lucky with the wonderful Rita Wilson. I’m the luckiest man alive."

Is anyone else here feeling very jealous of Hanks and Wilson's relationship right now? Looks like they're the couple to look to for inspiration!
