The star's tragic passing has resulted in the arrest of a California man who has been accused of fatally stabbing Xol.

In a statement to PEOPLE, Xol's family confirmed his passing, adding: "We are heartbroken at the tragic loss of our beloved Eduardo Xol. As his family, we know that his kindness has touched the lives of so many."

"We ask for that kindness returned now allowing our privacy to be respected as we process our grief," the statement continued. "In lieu of flowers we ask that donations be made in Eduardo’s name to the Lupus Foundation of America as he spent so much of his life in the service of others."

In his early career, Xol honed his talents as a singer and actor for projects in Latin America, before finally landing his role as a TV designer on the hit reality show. Throughout his seven seasons on the show, Xol helped to transform the homes of those in need, creating a number of feel-good television moments.

The Hollywood Reporter states that the apparent stabbing occurred on September 10 in Palm Springs, per a report from the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department.

Xol had reportedly called the Palm Springs Police Department that morning to alert them that he was in need of help.

When officers arrived, they reportedly found Xol in an apartment suffering from multiple stab wounds, a Palm Springs Police Department spokesperson told PEOPLE.

A man by the name of Richard Joseph Gonzales has been linked to the scene and was arrested. Police confirmed that the 34-year-old had been charged with attempted murder.

Following Xol's death, the Palm Springs Police Department then requested murder charges be filed against Gonzales, per the Desert Sun. They have since been accepted.

Gonzales is currently being held without bail at Riverside County.

Police have described Xol and Gonzales as "associates" - but the natured of the relationship is currently unclear.

Gonzales had called police shortly after the stabbing, which allowed officers to link him to the scene.

Our thoughts go out to Xol's family, friends, and fans at this time.
