In August of last year, the Wednesday star made headlines after she was inexplicably linked to Depp - who is 40 years older than her.

Speculations about a romantic connection between Ortega, 21, and Depp, 61, emerged after a report from the celebrity gossip account Deuxmoi hinted at a possible collaboration between the two in the upcoming Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, directed by Tim Burton.

The rumor mill then went into overdrive as fans and media outlets started to dissect every detail.

Now, Ortega has spoken out about the rumors in a new interview with Buzzfeed.

When asked about the "craziest rumor" she’s ever heard about herself, the Scream star said: "Probably that I was in a serious relationship with Johnny Depp and I wanted everybody to leave us alone."

"It’s so insane to me," Ortega added. "I never spoke on that. I never said anything like that."

Explaining the moment she first heard about the rumors, she said: "I thought that that was pretty hilarious. I was on set with Richard E. Grant and he came up to me and he said, ‘Oh, so you and Johnny…’ and I laughed because I don’t know that person."

Despite the rumors getting out of hand at the time, both stars were quick to shut them down.

At the time, Ortega stated on her Instagram story, cited by NME: "This is so ridiculous I can't even laugh.

"I have never met or worked with Johnny Depp in my life. Please stop spreading lies and leave us alone."

Depp's representative also issued a statement, categorically denying any connection between the two actors. Their statement read: "Mr. Depp has no personal or professional relationship with Ms. Ortega whatsoever."

The statement went on: "He has never met her or spoken to her. He is not involved in any project with her, nor does he intend to be. He is appalled by these baseless and malicious rumors that are intended to harm his reputation and career."

Of course, this wouldn't be the first time Ortega made headlines over a big age gap.

Earlier this year, many fans of the star were left stunned by her steamy scenes alongside 52-year-old Martin Freeman in the movie Miller's Girl.

After viewers said they were left "uncomfortable" over certain scenes, the movie's director - Jade Halley Bartlett - spoke out about the true purpose of the movie.

"I think a lot of the initial reactions — you know there's controversy around the movie and I hope that in that situation they can immerse themselves and surprise themselves with what the story actually is versus what their biases of what the story is," she told WhatToWatch, before explaining: "Because it's a play on a trope, it's my version of breaking this trope."
