The Vivienne - RuPaul's Drag Race star - dies aged 32

James Lee Williams - widely recognized by their stage name The Vivienne - has tragically passed away at the age of 32.

Known for their larger-than-life persona, The Vivienne rose to fame after winning the inaugural season of RuPaul’s Drag Race UK back in 2019.

The news of Williams’s death was confirmed by their publicist, Simon Jones, via a heartfelt Instagram post on Sunday evening.

“It is with immense sadness that we let you know our beloved James Lee Williams – The Vivienne, has passed this weekend,” Jones wrote. “James was an incredibly loved, warm-hearted, and amazing person. Their family are heartbroken at the loss of their son, brother, and uncle. They are so proud of the wonderful things James achieved in their life and career.

"We will not be releasing any further details.”

The statement concluded with a plea for privacy: “We please ask that James’s family are given the time and privacy they now need to process and grieve.”

The announcement prompted an outpouring of tributes from fellow performers, colleagues, and fans.

RuPaul’s Drag Race judge Michelle Visage expressed her grief in the comments, writing: “I don’t have the words. Utterly heartbroken.”

Fellow Drag Race UK star Bimini Bon Boulash added: "I’m so sorry [...] I’m in total shock".


Ashley Roberts of the Pussycat Dolls shared her shock, commenting: “Omg! I can’t believe this. This is heartbreaking news.”

Others from the entertainment world echoed the sentiment. Presenter Harriet Rose wrote: “Oh Simon I’m so sorry for your loss. That is absolutely heartbreaking,” while EastEnders actress Patsy Palmer reacted with disbelief, saying, “Hang on What ???????”

Coronation Street actor Antony Cotton added: “Speechless. James was a joy. What a loss x.”

The Vivienne was a celebrated performer who captivated audiences with their talent and charisma. Known for their impeccable impressions and glamorous style, they earned their iconic stage name due to their affinity for Vivienne Westwood designs.

In addition to their success on Drag Race UK, Williams showcased their theatrical talents in major stage productions. They recently portrayed the Childcatcher in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang on tour and had previously taken on the role of the Wicked Witch of the West in a revival of The Wizard of Oz.

They were set to reprise their role as the Childcatcher in 2025.

The beloved performer recently appeared on television over the Holidays as a guests on the Christmas special of Blankety Blank.
