Queen Elizabeth II has announced that she wishes for Camilla to be named Queen Consort when Prince Charles ascends the throne.

Today, February 6, marks the Queen's Platinum Jubilee, as she celebrates 70 years on the throne.

As part of the historic occasion, the 95-year-old sovereign has released her Platinum Jubilee message to the nation, which she has used to express support for the Duchess of Cornwall

It has long been debated whether or not Camilla - who is married to the heir to the throne, Prince Charles - will be bestowed the title of Queen Consort, but now the Queen has expressed her "sincere wish" that her daughter-in-law receives the royal status.

In her Platinum Jubilee message, the Queen writes: "And when, in the fullness of time, my son Charles becomes King, I know you will give him and his wife, Camilla, the same support that you have given me; and it is my sincere wish that, when that time comes, Camilla will be known as Queen Consort as she continues her own loyal service."

Per BBC News, "Queen Consort" refers to the spouse of a ruling king. It would mean that Camilla will be likely crowned alongside Charles as his coronation, and she will adopt the title "Queen Camilla" when the time comes.

A spokesperson for Clarence House told BBC News that both the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall were "touched and honored" by the Queen's message.

BBC royal correspondent Peter Hunt has also stated that the message is the Queen's way of ensuring that her son's ascension as king "is as seamless and trouble-free as possible".

Camilla and Charles married back in 2005 - 35 years after they first met. They both famously married other partners beforehand - Charles marrying Diana, Princess of Wales, and Camilla marrying British Army officer Andrew Parker Bowles. Nevertheless, the two maintained their close friendship.

Elsewhere in her Platinum Jubilee message, the Queen thanked her loyal supporters, writing:

"This anniversary also affords me a time to reflect on the goodwill shown to me by people of all nationalities, faiths and ages in this country and around the world over these years.

"I would like to express my thanks to you all for your support. I remain eternally grateful for, and humbled by, the loyalty and affection that you continue to give me."

Additionally, she paid tribute to her late husband, Prince Philip, who passed away in April last year.

"I was blessed that in Prince Philip I had a partner willing to carry out the role of consort and unselfishly make the sacrifices that go with it," the Queen wrote, adding: "It is a role I saw my own mother perform during my father’s reign."
