Haunting 911 call released after college student plunged from 8th floor after dancing on sofa
Details of the 911 calls received after a University of Georgia student accidentally fell from an eighth-floor apartment window have been revealed.
Kristin Sargent, 21, was miraculously escaped with her life after plummeting from the window of her eighth-floor apartment while dancing on a couch.
The senior was rushed to intensive care after she landed on the building's pool deck in Athens, Georgia, shortly after 7.30PM on Saturday.
A female friend who'd been with Sargent before the fall called 911, with the New York Post sharing that she told dispatchers: "We were dancing, and she just fell out of the window. She’s not moving."
The woman told the dispatcher that they'd been drinking, but added: "It was nothing extreme at all, we were all fully conscious."
Another resident of the Rambler Athens building where the accident occurred also rang 911 after witnessing Sargent fall.
The man, who was in a fifth-floor apartment, told the call handler: "I just saw someone fall out of, like, the eighth-floor window and land on the grass by the pool.
"They look like they’re unconscious, at least. We heard a noise and looked out and, yeah, it doesn’t look good."
Miraculously, Sargent survived the fall, and her father, Richard Sargent, told Channel 2 Action News that the finance and marketing student "can’t believe" she’s alive.
He added: "She’s a good fighter, and so she’s going to be OK."
Sargent was reportedly left with several broken bones from the fall, and while her father did not reveal what caused it, he said it came after the Georgia Bulldogs beat the Oklahoma Sooners 41-13 on Saturday, adding: "University of Georgia just won a football game. I bet there was a lot of kids here who are 21 years old who were super happy."
Police were dispatched to the apartment complex at around 7.37PM, with responding officer Erik Ellison writing in a report obtained by the New York Post: "I arrived and spoke with bystanders who advised that the female victim had been dancing on a couch or air mattress which was near an open window and had apparently fallen through the screen and onto the ground below.
"When I arrived, the victim was on the ground near the pool, which at this complex is in a courtyard on the second floor of the building.
"It appeared from the scene that the victim had struck a metal bench as she fell, as the cushion on the bench had some blood on it, and the armrest of the bench had broken off."
Ellison added that Sargent and other witnesses who were interviewed at the hospital all gave information that suggested the fall was an accident.
The report added that forensics had also processed the scene and that the investigation remains ongoing, adding: "At this time it appears that the victim will survive."
Witnesses reportedly said that a lounge chair may have helped break Sargent’s fall before she hit the ground.
Residents at the Rambler Athens building were also sent a message by management reminding them that windows throughout the complex have safety limiters and warning them not to “tamper with, remove or disengage” the devices, Channel 2 reported.
Authorities have not yet revealed whether the window Sargent dell from had a safety limiter engaged or if it had a role in the accident.
Management at The Rambler also told residents that it was cooperating with investigators, with a representative telling the Post: "Our thoughts are with our resident, and we are wishing for a speedy recovery.
"We are continuing to gather information and review the circumstances surrounding the incident."
