At least 19 killed as tornado rips through Tennessee

Per CBS News, at least 19 people are believed to have been killed in Tennessee as the result of at least one tornado and severe storms that tore through Nashville and the region late on Monday and early on Tuesday.

The death toll had been reported as 9 earlier on Tuesday but jumped to 19 after more bodies were recovered from fallen buildings, per the Associated Press.

According to authorities, an as yet undetermined number of people are missing.

“Last night was a reminder about how fragile life is,” Nashville mayor John Cooper said at a press conference on Tuesday morning.

City Fire Chief William Swann said that more than 150 people have been taken to hospitals in Nashville due to the storm. "As tragic as this is -- and our hearts are broken -- we are certain that we'll surround these folks and we'll do what is necessary" Gov. Bill Lee said of the incident, per CNN.

44,000 people are believed to have been left without power, according to Nashville Electric.
