There were a lot of memorable moments at yesterday's inauguration, but one of the most unlikely were Bernie Sanders's mittens.

The handwear completely stole the show for viewers online and it has now emerged that there is a sweet story behind the brown-and-cream knit gloves.

BuzzFeed reports that a Vermont teacher made the gloves for Sanders' some years ago, and he went on to wear them on his campaign trail.

Ellis, a teacher from Essex Junction, revealed on Twitter that she had created Sanders' gloves from repurposed wool sweaters to make the mittens fleece made from recycled plastic bottles.

In the video below, Bernie declares victory in New Hampshire:

Alongside a picture of the now-famous middens, Ellis wrote in a tweet last year: "I made Bernie’s mittens as a gift a couple [of] years ago. They are made from repurposed wool sweaters and lined with fleece (made from recycled plastic bottles). #BerniesMittens."

Seven Days, a Vermont publication, reports that Ellis' daughter's daycare is run by Bernie's daughter-in-law, Liza Driscoll, and she made mittens for all of the teachers there too.

Bernie's mittens are now so popular that they even have their own Twitter account under the username @BerniesMittens.

"Bernie Sanders in his mittens just might be one of the most adorable things you’ll see today," wrote a fan of the middens.

A second wrote: "good morning to bernie's mittens especially [sic]."

A third remarked: "In all the inauguration fashion news, let us not overlook Senator Bernie Sanders' mittens."

Whereas a fourth couldn't help but point out the aforementioned fan Twitter, writing alongside a heart-eyes emoji: "This is now a Bernie Sanders mittens stan account."

Bernie paired the mittens with a light brown coat from Burton, a company based in Vermont.

CBS asked Bernie about his casual ensemble and he said: "You know in Vermont, we dress warm, we know something about the cold, and we're not so concerned about good fashion, we want to keep warm. And that's what I did today."
