Bette Midler is facing backlash on social media after posting several "xenophobic" tweets about Melania Trump, going as far as to brand the First Lady an "illegal alien".
Last night (August 25), Melania took to the stage at the Republican National Convention to deliver a speech calling for husband Donald Trump to receive another four years in office.
Melania's full speech can be seen below:

However, the 50-year-old former model, born in Novo Mesto, Slovenia, sadly found herself the victim of ridicule from actress Bette Midler on social media.
So, was Midler criticizing Melania's policies or statements? No, the 74-year-old was attacking the First Lady of the United States over her accent.
Now, it doesn't matter what side of politics you're on or who you are going to vote for in November, it is never okay to ridicule somebody from another country for "not speaking English" to a standard that you find acceptable.
But that didn't stop Midler from taking to Twitter to write: "Oh, God. She still can’t speak English," during Melania's address.

In another tweet, the Hocus Pocus star wrote: "#beBest is back! A UGE bore! She can speak several words in a few languages. Get that illegal alien off the stage!"

Midler also addressed the First Lady, saying: "You are one lucky Slovenian! And after all that surgery, you hit a kind of horrible jackpot, chained to [a] colossal idiot."
And in another tweet, Midler said: "I’m surprised Trump wants to destroy the #PostOffice. He got all his wives from it."

And it wasn't long before Midler's comments were being called out for what they were: xenophobic.

In response to the backlash, Middler has since posted a tweet explaining her comments, writing: "Why not? Just giving them a taste of their own immigrant bashing medicine. I guess they’re not keen."

Of course, no matter what you think of Trump's policies or actions in the past, two wrongs do not make a right.
And for the record, according to Melania, she is fluent in five languages. Alongside her native Slovenian, she can speak English, French, Italian, and German.
