An Atlanta police officer has been hailed as a hero after saving an unresponsive baby by performing CPR.

As reported by CNN, the incredible but terrifying moment unfolded on Friday when Atlanta Police Department SWAT officer Robert Oden was on patrol.

Oden spotted a vehicle driving down the road with its hazard lights on and the car horn "frantically blowing", per the APD.

The car eventually parked up outside of a fire department and those inside rushed to Oden for help.

A statement from the APD adds: "A female ran to the officer holding a 4-month-old infant saying the child was not breathing. SPO Oden remained calm and began checking the child’s pulse."

The video can be seen below (Warning - some people will find the footage distressing):

However, when Oden was unable to locate a pulse on the infant, he informed radio dispatch and started to administer CPR on the child.

In front of the child's terrified family, Oden used his thumb to administer chest compressions for around one minute. Amazingly, this was enough to successful restart the child's pulse. Towards the end of the video, the child's legs can be seen starting to kick.

Oden then handed the child off to Grady EMS, who was able to transport the baby to a nearby hospital for further treatment.

"If being at the right place at the right time was a person, SPO Oden is him," the APD writes. "He could not have imagined that his patrolling that area would result in this type of emergency encounter."

"This is another example of the heroic work that officers do on any given day. His response reflects a high level of training, readiness, and compassion," the statement adds.

Praising its officer for his "quick, calm, caring, and professional" actions, the APD concluded the statement by saying:

"We could not be prouder of him in this critical moment. We know the City of Atlanta is safer with SPO Oden and our team of professional, responsive, and caring officers who do this work and patrol our streets, 24/7, and 365 days a week. It is indeed a calling.

"Job well-done sir!"

And after amassing more than 22,000 views on the City of Atlanta Police Department Facebook page, social media users were quick to also praise Oden for his heroic actions.

"Great job SPO Oden, this is a great example of what Atlanta Police officers do for the citizens of Atlanta. Thank you for being in the right place and time for this little angel," wrote one Facebook user.

A second added: "Brought me to tears. How scary for that family. God placed this officer in the right place at the right time. Well done, sir!"

"Great job SPO Oden! Definitely brought tears to my eyes," commented a third.

Well done to SPO Oden! We wish him and this family the best for their futures.
