Congratulations are in order for the Governor of Colorado, Jared Polis, and his longtime partner Marlon Reis!

Polis had previously made history as the first openly gay man in the US to be elected governor and is now the first sitting governor to enter into a same-sex marriage, NBC News reports.

The newlyweds, who have been together for 18 years, were engaged in December of last year, before tying the knot in a small traditional Jewish ceremony on Wednesday, September 15.

"Over the course of Jared's career in Congress, you know, we didn't set out to be the first of anything. Things sort of happened that way," Reis told Colorado Public Radio.

Polis and Reis released a very touching joint statement following the nuptials, saying: "The greatest lesson we have learned over the past 18 months is that life as we know it can change in an instant. We are thankful for the health and well-being of our family and friends, and the opportunity to celebrate our life together as a married couple."

Polis, a former US representative, currently serves as Democratic governor of Colorado. He was elected to the post in November of 2018 and in January, was officially sworn in.

The couple, who have two children aged seven and nine, got engaged shortly before Reis was taken to hospital after falling ill with Covid-19, NBC affiliate KUSA of Denver reports.

Polis had also tested positive for the disease but fortunately did not experience any severe symptoms.

The governor wrote on his personal Facebook account regarding the special occasion on Wednesday: "Today First Gentleman Marlon Reis and I were married in a small ceremony with family and a few close friends.

"We are both excited for this new chapter in our lives together, and our hearts are full with the blessings of health, love, and family."

While Polis is the first gay man to be elected governor in US history, Oregon's Democratic Governor Kate Brown, who is openly bisexual, became the first member of the LGBT community to be elected governor back in 2016.

Furthermore, former Rep. Barney Frank, D-Mass., was the first sitting member of Congress to wed a person of the same sex some years earlier in 2012.
