The news of the actor and yoga teacher's death was confirmed by his sister, Nkem Ndefo, who shared an emotional post to Facebook on Saturday (August 31).

Sharing a touching photo of the siblings together, Nkem wrote: "Heartbroken at the loss of my younger brother [...] and knowing he’s finally at peace."

PEOPLE has reported that no further details have been shared regarding the actor's death.

Ndefo is perhaps best known to fans for his role in Dawson’s Creek, in which he played Bodie Wells from 1998 to 2002.

When news of his passing broke, Dawson’s Creek star Mary-Margaret Humes - who played Dawson’s mom Gale Leery on the show - took to Instagram to share an emotional video tribute from their time on set.

"These words don’t come easy," Humes wrote in the caption. "It’s hard for me to conceive that you have left us, my dear friend.

"You always were and always will be a bright shining light. What an example of pure unfiltered love and tenacity you set as you faced life’s challenges of recent. I will cherish all of our messages of love and support to each other over the past few years. Rest in peace sweet warrior."

A graduate of Yale University's drama school, Ndefo had appeared in a number of popular US shows, including Star Trek: Voyager, Stargate SG-1, The West Wing, and The Jamie Foxx Show.

In 2019, Ndefo tragically lost both of his legs after being hit by a car while packing up groceries in a parking lot.

Speaking to The Los Angeles Times about the incident, he told the paper: "How do you know how you would handle this? … And anyway, what’s the alternative? ... This is just so horrendous what happened to me, why would I compound this by feeling bad about it?"

"There is no other choice for me," he continued. "So there’s a sort of rigor to me, and I think, ‘OK my legs are severed. I don’t know how to do this, but I know how to do this.'"

The actor would often share his rehabilitation journey with his Instagram followers.

Ndefo was also a renowned yoga teacher.

Our thoughts go out to Ndefo's family, friends, and fans at this time.
