Further details have emerged regarding the prison attack on George Floyd killer Derek Chauvin.

Last month, it was revealed that the former Minneapolis police officer was the victim of a serious attack at the Federal Correctional Institution in Tucson, Arizona.

The medium-security prison has previously faced criticism for security lapses and staffing shortages.

Shortly after the attack, a source informed the Associated Press that the 47-year-old ex-cop was left seriously injured after another inmate had stabbed him.

In a statement shared with media outlets, the Bureau of Prisons confirmed that the detainee was punctured at 12:30PM local time on Friday (November 24) at the facility. At the time, Chauvin was not named. The statement from the Bureau of Prisons added that "no employees were injured during the incident" and that Chauvin received "life-saving measures"

"The incarcerated individual was transported by EMS to a local hospital for further treatment and evaluation," the statement concluded.

After the FBI was notified of the incident, further disturbing details about the attack have emerged.

As reported by CBS News, the US Attorney's Office has named Chauvin's attacker as John Turscak - a former member of the Mexican Mafia.

Turscak has since been charged with attempted murder, assault with intent to commit murder, assault with a dangerous weapon, and assault resulting in serious bodily injury.

In the filed criminal charges, it was revealed that Chauvin was stabbed 22 times with an "improvised knife".

Turscak also reportedly told corrections officers that he would have killed Chauvin if they had not intervened in time.

Chauvin is said to be in stable condition.

Following the attack on Chauvin, his mother - Carolyn Pawlenty - told Alpha News that she learned of her son's attack through the media.

"How the hell do these news agencies know and his own mother doesn’t even know? And that [prison] has an emergency contact number [for me]," Pawlenty said.

"I can’t even think what to say. I haven’t been to bed and made a path in my kitchen and living room floor by pacing. I am worried and scared," she added. "I have to stay strong for Derek as he does for me. There is no stronger love than a mother’s love."

Additionally, in a press release to CNN, Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison - whose office prosecuted Chauvin in the George Floyd case - said last week: "I am sad to hear that Derek Chauvin was the target of violence. He was duly convicted of his crimes and, like any incarcerated individual, he should be able to serve his sentence without fear of retaliation or violence."

Derek Chauvin is currently serving time behind bars after being found guilty of George Floyd's murder.

The incident - which resulted in protests against police brutality and systemic racism worldwide - was captured on camera and showed Chauvin kneeling on Floyd's neck for more than nine minutes on May 25, 2020.

Floyd's cries of "I can’t breathe" could be heard throughout the footage before he fell unconscious.

Chauvin was later found guilty of Floyd's murder and sentenced to 22 years in prison. He was given a further 20-year sentence in July 2022 for violating Floyd's civil rights.
