Police in Alexandria, Virginia, responded around 9AM on Saturday (March 22) to a report of an “unresponsive woman” at the 900 block of Beverley Drive. Upon arrival, they found that the woman was deceased.

“Following notification of family members, the Alexandria Police Department can confirm the identity of the woman as Ms. Jessica Aber, age 43, former U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia,” the official police statement read.

An investigation is currently underway, and the Virginia Office of the Chief Medical Examiner will determine the cause and manner of death.

The late woman, who was nominated by President Joe Biden, served as U.S. Attorney for EDVA from 2021 to 2025.

She stepped down from her role shortly before Donald Trump was sworn in as the 47th President of the United States earlier this year.

According to the Department of Justice website, Aber led a staff "of approximately 300 prosecutors, civil litigators, and support personnel across four Divisions located in Alexandria, Richmond, Norfolk, and Newport News,” and served “over six million residents” throughout the district.

News of Aber's death has sparked emotional responses from those who knew her professionally.

Current EDVA U.S. Attorney Erik S. Siebert issued a heartfelt tribute, stating the office is “heartbroken beyond words.” Praising Aber as a “leader, mentor and prosecutor” who was “unmatched,” Siebert said she was “simply irreplaceable as a human being.”

"We remain in awe of how much she accomplished in her all too brief time in this world. Her professionalism, grace, and legal acumen set the standard. Though we are devastated by this loss, each of us in the Eastern District of Virginia will look to her example and endeavor to live up to that standard," Siebert shared.

"Jess was a proud Virginian from high school through college and throughout her career. She loved EDVA and EDVA loved her back. We remain committed to her life’s work, a commitment to seeking justice, as she would have wanted," he added.

Virginia Attorney General Jason Miyares also posted about Aber’s death on X (formerly Twitter), noting her contributions to public safety.

“I am saddened to learn of the passing of Jessica Aber, whose career of public service included US Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia and whose work with Ceasefire Virginia saved more lives than we may ever realize,” he wrote. “Our thoughts and our prayers are with her family this week.”

Attorney General Pamela Bondi added: "The loss of Jessica Aber, former U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, is deeply tragic. Our hearts and prayers go out to her family and friends during this profoundly difficult time."

Our thoughts are with Aber's loved ones at this time.
