Who run the world? Girls!

Women showed the United States what they were made of on Tuesday night when more than 100 were elected to Congress in the midterm elections, a historic victory which marks an all-time high for female presence in the House. With results still rolling in, it's a definite that the exact number will easily surpass the standing record of 84 women in the House of Representatives.

Notable victories yesterday included Ilhan Omar and Rashida Tlaib, who became the first two Muslim women ever elected to Congress, as well as Sharice Davids and Deb Haaland who became the first two Native American women to win election to the House. In addition, several Democratic women flipped districts that had been Republican for years and New York Democratic congressional nominee Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, 29, became the youngest woman ever to set foot in Congress.

But, rather than celebrating individual victories, people on social media were all about girl power as they took to Twitter to post of their elation, as America saw more females in high-level political positions than ever before.

Beyoncé had it completely right

And, of course, we knew it all along

Needless to say, when the results came in, there were celebrations to be had

We were all so proud of our girls

Absolutely fabulous work, ladies!

Rest assured, Professor McGonagall is sitting in Hogwarts somewhere beaming

Because the future is female

And although we have a lot more work to do

Let's break out the champagne and party cake

Because girls run the world!

Turns out a woman's place really was in the house, huh? And the Senate... and the White House.
