New York Times tech exec, 40, dead ‘after his masked elderly in-laws took turns shooting him in parking lot’

A 40-year-old man was attacked in the parking lot of the Dublin Sports Grounds around 3:00PM Saturday.
Officers patrolling the area noticed Jonathan McKinsey suffering from multiple gunshot wounds as emergency dispatchers received a flood of 911 calls from witnesses. First responders attempted to save his life, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police arrested his elderly in-laws, Shouyong Zhang and Shili Chen, both 77, near the scene of the shooting. The New York Times confirmed that McKinsey was the victim of the attack and noted that he had been employed by the company since 2023.
Subsequent investigations revealed that McKinsey was married to the couple's daughter, Candice Jang.
Arrest and charges against the suspects
Witnesses at the scene reported seeing two masked assailants approach McKinsey in the parking lot before taking turns shooting him. Video footage recorded in the aftermath showed a body lying in the lot while officers placed the two suspects into the back of a police vehicle.
Zhang and Chen were booked into the Santa Rita Jail in Alameda County. According to booking records, the couple faces several severe allegations, including first-degree murder, felony conspiracy, firing a gun dangerously, and child endangerment that could have caused major injury or death.
Jail records indicate that while the couple currently resides in the Dublin area, they also maintain ties to Albuquerque, New Mexico.
McKinsey's career in technology
McKinsey built a career in software engineering and management spanning nearly two decades. He earned a Master's degree in Computer Science from UC Berkeley in 2015. Nathan Wu, whose LinkedIn profile shows past work at UC Berkeley, commented on McKinsey's LinkedIn page: "Rip buddy."
Early in his career, McKinsey held hands-on software engineering roles at institutions and corporations such as NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Hewlett Packard Enterprise, and Oracle, along with work in product strategy at Coursera. He moved into engineering management at UKG in 2018 and later held leadership roles at Splunk.
At the New York Times, McKinsey initially served as a senior engineering manager for the games platform starting in early 2023, where he managed infrastructure for viral features like Connections. He later transitioned to the games player experience team and was promoted to director of engineering for games player experience in late 2025, where he directed a 25-person team focusing on feature innovation and monetization.
