Doug Martin, a former NFL running back celebrated for his dynamic career with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Oakland Raiders, has died at the age of 36.
His passing occurred Saturday morning (October 18) following a medical emergency while in the custody of the Oakland Police Department.
The incident has prompted multiple investigations and raised serious concerns about the circumstances surrounding Martin’s death, with some officers put on leave, per the Independent.
Break-In Call Ends in Tragedy
According to law enforcement sources and public statements, Martin was detained after police responded to reports of a break-in near the Oakland Zoo shortly before 5:00AM on Saturday.
Officers were called to the 11000 block of Ettrick Street, where they received two simultaneous reports: one of a burglary in progress, and another regarding an individual suffering a medical emergency.
“Officers responded to the area for an individual who had broken into a nearby residence. Simultaneously, officers were notified of an individual who was experiencing a medical emergency and was believed to be the same individual related to the break-in,” stated the Oakland Police Department.

“Paramedic personnel arrived, provided medical aid, and transported the individual to an area hospital for further treatment. Unfortunately, the individual later died at the hospital,” the department confirmed.
