People have raised more than $600,000 for a 75-year-old grandmother who sent her attacker to hospital after fighting back against his unprovoked assault on her.

As reported by the Metro, the unnamed attacker, 39, allegedly walked up to Xiao Zhen Zie and slapped her. The incident occurred on Wednesday morning in San Francisco and saw the senior citizen defend herself by striking the man with a walking stick.

Police in the city are reportedly trying to determine whether that attack on the elderly Asian woman was racially motivated.

Following the "traumatizing" ordeal, Zie's family set up a GoFundMe to help cover medical and therapy costs.

The initial target of the fundraiser was set at $50,000, however, $640,138 has been raised so far - and it appears that the donations are still pouring in.

Zie's grandson John Chen, who set up the fundraiser, wrote: "She is now suffering two serious black eyes and one that is bleeding unstoppably.

"Her wrist has also swelled up. She has been severely affected mentally, physically, and emotionally. She also stated that she is afraid to step out of her home from now on. This traumatic event has left her with PTSD."

He continued: "My heart is with all the other elderly Asians that have also been seriously injured or killed in this wave of attacks towards the Asian community."

In an update, Chen revealed that "whenever the issue is brought up to her, she gets extremely emotional and starts crying."

He added: "We have to constantly calm her down and comfort her from her PTSD. She is still really dizzy and can only eat porridge."

Zie, whose eyes left blackened by the attacker, told KPIX 5 that she was feeling "very traumatized" and "very scared".

She added: "This eye is still bleeding. The right eye still cannot see anything and [is] still bleeding, and we have something to absorb the bleeding."

Footage of the incident has been shared online, showing Zie shouting at the alleged attacker as he is taken to hospital on a stretcher.

Police confirmed they are investigating a 39-year-old man in connection with this incident.

The incident comes as people on social media are calling for an end to hate crimes against Asian people.
