A violent rampage in the heart of New York City on Monday afternoon resulted in the death of a young financial executive.
Erin Piacenti, 32, of Chester, New Jersey, was killed in an unprovoked attack in Times Square on Monday, August 31. She was employed in New York City by Bank of America, where she served as the Vice President of Business Selection and Conflicts, sources told The New York Post.
The incident took place on a busy afternoon in the area, drawing a heavy police presence and cutting short the lives of a victim and her attacker, it was revealed at a police news conference.
The tragic loss occurred just weeks after she reached a personal milestone. Social media posts show that Piacenti had recently celebrated her second wedding anniversary on August 10. Prior to her career in finance, she earned a degree from the University of Pennsylvania in 2016 and later graduated from Fordham Law School in 2021.
Details of the attack in Times Square
The incident began around 4:30PM near the intersection of 42nd Street and Seventh Avenue. Authorities identified the attacker as 49-year-old Pamela Cisneros, who produced two large kitchen knives after a 68-year-old man exited the subway on West 41st Street.
Cisneros stabbed the elderly man in the abdomen before moving toward 42nd Street, where she attacked Piacenti. NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch told reporters after the attack that Piacenti suffered a fatal knife wound to the abdomen during the "unprovoked attack" near the busy intersection.
Police response and aftermath
Following the stabbings, responding officers quickly cornered the suspect in the crowded area. Video recorded at the scene showed Cisneros holding the two large knives while facing law enforcement personnel.
When the woman charged directly at the officers, police fired their weapons, killing her at the scene. Emergency responders and crime scene investigators arrived shortly after to manage the area, securing evidence markers near blood and shell casings on the pavement.
The 68-year-old male victim was taken to a local hospital for treatment following the initial assault. Law enforcement officials continue to investigate the events leading up to the violence in Midtown Manhattan.
