The White House has hit back after a fresh wave of social media speculation falsely claimed that Donald Trump had died.
Rumors began spreading online after the White House announced that Vice President JD Vance would be holding a press briefing, with some users immediately jumping to the conclusion that he could be preparing to announce Trump's death.
The speculation comes after months of scrutiny surrounding the 80-year-old US leader's recent health, including questions about peculiar bruising on his hands, swelling around his legs, and several visits to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center.
However, there has been no official indication that Trump has died or is unable to carry out his duties.
Trump became the oldest person ever elected US president when he won the 2024 election and returned to the White House in January 2025.
Now 80, he is due to remain in office until January 2029 if he completes his second term, and will become the oldest person ever to be in office in the United States.
His age has inevitably placed his physical and cognitive health under intense public scrutiny, particularly after photographs appeared to show bruising on his right hand and swelling around his lower legs and ankles.
The White House previously said Trump had undergone medical tests after experiencing mild swelling in his legs.
An ultrasound found he had chronic venous insufficiency, a condition affecting blood flow from the legs back towards the heart.
White House physician Dr Sean Barbabella described it as a "benign and common condition, particularly in individuals over the age of 70."
Officials said testing found no evidence of deep vein thrombosis, arterial disease or heart failure.
The White House has also attributed the bruising on Trump's hand to frequent handshaking combined with his use of aspirin as part of a cardiovascular prevention programme.
In October 2025, Trump confirmed that he had undergone an MRI during what officials described as a routine medical appointment.
“I did. I got an MRI. It was perfect,” he told reporters aboard Air Force One.
“The doctor said [it] was some of the best reports, for the age, they’ve ever seen.”
Trump did not explain why the scan had been ordered, instead telling reporters to "ask the doctors."
Dr Barbabella subsequently described the appointment as a "scheduled follow-up evaluation as part of his ongoing health maintenance plan."
He said the examination included advanced imaging, laboratory tests and preventative health assessments, adding that Trump continued to demonstrate "excellent overall health."
Trump returned to Walter Reed again in May 2026; this time, a medical memo released afterwards said the slight swelling in his lower legs remained but had improved compared with the previous year.
The document described the bruising on his hand as benign and linked it to minor soft-tissue irritation from frequent handshaking while taking aspirin.
According to the White House, Trump's cardiac function was normal, and his neurological examination showed a normal mental state.
Dr Barbabella said the president remained in "excellent health" and was "fully fit to carry out all duties" as commander-in-chief and head of state.
Trump also offered his own assessment, telling reporters that "everything checked out perfectly."
Despite those reassurances, Trump's health has remained a subject of debate among some critics, with cardiologist Dr Jonathan Reiner, who previously treated former Vice President Dick Cheney and has worked as a medical analyst, saying he is "seriously concerned about the health of the president."
Trump's niece Mary Trump, a psychologist and vocal critic of her uncle, has also questioned his condition.
She claimed that apparent signs of confusion had repeatedly been dismissed by Trump's supporters.
“Every single day Donald Trump appears to be losing it,” she claimed.
Other critics have similarly pointed towards occasions when Trump has appeared to slur words, confuse names or close his eyes during public appearances.
Trump has consistently rejected suggestions that he is suffering from cognitive decline and has described himself as being in excellent health.
This isn't the first time Trump's absence from public view has triggered online rumours about his death, with a similar situation materializing earlier in the year.
The latest frenzy began after the White House Press Office announced that Vice President JD Vance would take part in a briefing.
“Vice President @JDVance will take the podium tomorrow at 1:00PM,” the official account announced on X.
Vance is expected to lead his first White House press briefing since July.
The announcement did not provide details about what he intended to discuss, nor did it suggest that there was an emergency involving Trump.
Nevertheless, users quickly flooded the post with speculation.
One person wrote: “If it’s anything besides Trump dead get off we don’t wanna hear it.”
Another joked: “If they say he’s dead I’m personally buying everyone drinks.”
Others posted fake breaking-news messages, including: “Trump found dead at 80.”
One user simply wrote: “BREAKING: Donald Trump has died.”
Another added: “After all the deaths we’ve had lately, nothing would surprise me. Not even this.”
There was, however, nothing in the original White House announcement to suggest that Trump had died.
With rumors once again circulating online, the White House was contacted directly and asked to respond to claims that Trump had died.
A spokesperson for the administration, Davis Ingle, responded with an extraordinary attack on those spreading the rumors.
“Only glue-sniffing degenerates would obsessively push baseless conspiracy theories about President Trump, and that’s because they suffer from a severe, crippling disease known as Trump Derangement Syndrome that has completely rotted their peanut-sized brains,” Ingle told IGV.
He continued: “President Trump’s sharpness, unmatched energy, relentless work ethic and historic accessibility stand in stark contrast to what we saw during the last administration when Democrats and the legacy media intentionally covered up Joe Biden’s serious mental and physical decline from the American people.”
Despite the flurry of posts claiming otherwise, there is currently no official indication that Trump has died.
