Wladimir Klitschko breaks silence following Hayden Panettiere’s death as he has full custody of their daughter
Wladimir Klitschko has spoken publicly following the death of his former partner, actress Hayden Panettiere, saying his family is facing a period of “profound shock and grief”.
The Heroes and Nashville star died suddenly on Sunday, August 16, aged just 36. Panettiere and Klitschko share a daughter, Kaya, who was born in 2014.
Klitschko shares heartbreaking statement on Panettiere
The former boxing champion shared a photograph of himself, Panettiere and their daughter together on a beach alongside a lengthy statement addressing the devastating loss.
Klitschko wrote on Instagram: “Our family is going through a time of profound shock and grief.
“The announcement of Hayden’s tragic death saddens me deeply. She left this world far too soon. Hayden was, although no longer my partner, an important part of my life and the mother of our daughter, Kaya.”
He went on to reflect on Panettiere's career and the challenges she faced during her time in the spotlight.
“She built an incredible career through immense talent, while also facing the darker sides of a very demanding industry,” he wrote.
“Nothing will erase the times we shared or the place she had in our lives.”
Klitschko also addressed their daughter directly, promising to ensure Kaya remembers her mother with love and respect.
“To our daughter Kaya, I will always speak of her mother with respect and make sure she remembers the person she was,” he said.
He also sent his condolences to Panettiere's loved ones and fans, adding: “I extend my deepest condolences to Hayden’s parents, her friends, and her fans, who are also grieving today.”
“Young and talented people like Hayden should not leave this world so soon.”
Klitschko then asked for privacy as the family comes to terms with Panettiere's death.
“I ask everyone to please respect our family’s feelings and privacy during this incredibly difficult time,” he wrote. “For now, this is all I wish to say.”
He concluded by thanking those who had reached out to support the family before writing: “Rest easy, Hayden. May you find eternal peace. #WeLoveYouHayden.”
The couple's relationship history
Panettiere and Klitschko began dating in 2009 before becoming engaged. They welcomed Kaya in 2014 and eventually separated in 2018.
The actress had previously spoken openly about her struggles with addiction and postpartum depression, as well as the difficult decision to relinquish custody of Kaya to Klitschko while she sought treatment.
