Woman charged after cops say she was doing X-rated act before crash that killed man in Utah
A woman has been charged after police said she was doing an X-rated act before allegedly causing a car crash that killed a man.
Christine Chao, of Rosemead, California, was charged with automobile homicide, a second-degree felony, for the deadly collision that took place on June 12, TMZ reported.
At the time, the 44-year-old was driving on I-15 when she plowed into a white sedan, which had slowed down in a construction zone.
"Two vehicles were traveling at a slower speed when a vehicle driven by the defendant, Christine Chao, struck the rearmost vehicle, causing it to crash into the vehicle ahead of it," charging documents viewed by KSL read.
The sedan then hit the SUV driving in front of it, and all three cars went off the road.
Chao was watching porn before the crash killed a 66-year-old
Scott LaVar Lichfield, a 66-year-old Utah man, was riding in the backseat of one of the cars in the crash and suffered a head injury in the accident.
He was airlifted to the hospital, where he was later pronounced dead, per Fox13now.
When first responders arrived, Chao allegedly admitted the accident was her fault, and officers were unable to find brake marks indicating she slowed before colliding with the other cars.
A warrant was obtained for her phone, and investigators found out that she accessed a pornographic video website, xvideos.com, less than two minutes before the crash occurred.
Chao is not being arrested, and a summons has been issued for her to appear at any forthcoming court hearings.
The late man's family shared an emotional obituary
Lichfield's family opened up about their loss in an obituary, which read: "It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of our sweet Husband, Dad, Papa (Pop Pop), Uncle, Cousin, Nephew. He was one very loved gentle soul. He died on June 12, 2026, from injuries sustained in an auto accident."
He was also remembered as a Sunday school teacher and finance professional.
"Scott served faithfully in many callings as a Sunday School Teacher to a couple of crowds of boys and a lone girl. He loved those kids," the obituary continued. "Nursery leader, Elders Quorum Teacher, Scout Leader (a calling that he completely loved with all his heart), and Financial Clerk.
"This calling was his complete heart. He loved serving among all these good men. He served as a financial clerk in three different wards," they added.
The family penned they will "miss this dear, sweet, kind, friendly man," adding: "Everyone was a friend to him. We have felt the love and kindness from so many people. He would have been so touched to know how very loved he was.
"The very best thing he loved was just being with his children and grandchildren. He would see a grandchild and say to them, 'Come give me a hug.' He loved them so very much. He read to them, watched movies with them, played chess, and built legos. They all loved their Papa/Pop Pop," they stated.
He is survived by his wife, Debbie, with whom he had just celebrated their 39th wedding anniversary the day before, along with his five children and 11 grandchildren.
