A woman who says she came close to death after being hit by a truck as an 18-year-old has recounted a dramatic near-death experience that she claims completely changed the course of her life.
LuAnn VanBuskirk was a teenager in Michigan when she was involved in the near-fatal crash while riding her bike across a four-way intersection, when a truck crashed into her.
Speaking on God Encounters with Janie DuVall on YouTube, VanBuskirk, now 61, said she suddenly found herself looking down on the accident from above, describing the experience as the beginning of a spiritual encounter involving God, an evil presence, and a warning about the consequences of her life’s choices.
VanBuskirk recalled being dragged away from the crash by an entity with "gnarly" fingers wrapped around her arm. As she was taken toward a city shrouded in yellow fog, she immediately believed the force was "evil."
Despite trying to resist, she claimed she was unable to break free from the grip of the presence, describing a booming voice that she later believed was God addressing her directly.
VanBuskirk maintained that she had previously mocked Christianity and questioned the existence of God, but the experience forced her to reconsider her beliefs after being shown where her choices would ultimately lead.
Discussing the incident, the 61-year-old claimed that she resisted the message she was receiving but was given a short response: “My word says.”
VanBuskirk said the experience caused her to reflect on her previous lifestyle, including drinking and smoking weed, claiming that she suddenly understood that she was “going to hell based on my own free will choices”.
According to VanBuskirk, the mysterious voice answered with another unmistakably powerful tone, which she described as “cracked” and said “shook” her “like a dead man twice”.
She recalled the words she believed she heard: “This sound said, ‘Even the very demons believe in Jesus. How do you say you do better?’”
According to her account, she was taken through her past actions and sins individually and allowed to accept God, claiming that she initially continued to resist before experiencing what she described as intense “spiritual” pain within her physical body.
It was this, she says, that ultimately forced her to reconsider her life.
She stated that she had previously thought: “If God is real, why would he let this happen to me?” But she now believes the near-death experience fundamentally altered her understanding of faith.
VanBuskirk also claims the experience was followed by a series of events which she interpreted as further signs from God, including several meetings with figures of religious significance, as well as paternal ancestors.
According to VanBuskirk, hearing the gospel afterwards gave her a feeling that something was continually drawing her towards God, describing it as a “string” pulling her towards faith.
While VanBuskirk remains convinced that her experience was a genuine encounter with God and the afterlife, her account is a personal interpretation of a near-death experience. There is no established scientific evidence that such experiences prove the existence of God, Heaven or Hell.
For VanBuskirk, however, the experience became a defining moment that she says permanently changed the way she viewed her life, her choices and her faith.
