We all know how terrifying it is to wake up from a nightmare, look around our rooms, and start to see things. The robe hanging on your door suddenly looks like a person, and when you blink you see ghostly shadows...

Caves are so much worse because there's always something living in the darkness. When a team of rescuers in Los Angeles got a call about cries that were heard in a nearby cave, they were cautious, but it was their job to investigate; whatever was living in the cave needed their help and fast. What they eventually found in this dark, gloomy cave left them shaking...
On arrival at the cave, the rescuers knew that they had their work cut out for them. The cave was narrow and 18 feet deep, making it incredibly difficult for anyone to squeeze themselves inside. They shined a torch inside, but couldn't see anything - but they could definitely hear cries. They needed to go deeper...
You might be wondering why the rescuers were determined to save whatever was in the cave. It was because they'd just been to their friend's funeral. She was an animal lover and rescuer. To honor her memory, they took on the mission...
2. They Dug
Before the rescuers were able to establish what was crying inside the cave, they first had to get into it. A male rescuer was able to squeeze himself inside, but not deep enough. That meant that he only had one option: to dig! Thankfully, they had a small silver pot on hand that he used to help himself get further inside. Then he pulled out a flashlight...
NEXT: Then, the rescuer saw a pair of eyes looking back at him...
There's no doubt that the rescuer must have been nervous. He was in a tight position to say the least. He'd have been hoping that whatever was inside the cave wouldn't be frightened by him. He'd struggle to get out quickly if it attacked...
3. The Eyes Looking Back
Once he was close enough to shine a light inside, he took out his flashlight. He nervously shone it deep into the cave and was startled when two eyes suddenly appeared. The darkness meant it was impossible to tell what they belonged to...
NEXT: The nearby area could explain why the creature sought shelter in a cave...
The cave was located on the outskirts of Los Angeles, between a busy highway and a railway track. It's possible that whatever was inside the caves was hiding from the constant stream of dangerous traffic...
4. The Location Of The Cave
The cries has been heard by several pedestrians and workers of the railway site. However, they were all apprehensive to investigate due to the wildlife in the area. It was not uncommon for large and dangerous species such as bobcats, cougars and coyotes to seek shelter, and attack if they feel threatened.
NEXT: The rescuers try a different tactic to lure whatever was inside out...
Until this point, the rescuers didn't realise just how tight a squeeze it was going to be. They didn't know if the animal inside was injured or not, but they figured they'd try and easier tactic before going even further into cave...
5. The Cheeseburger Trap
The rescuers tired to lure the animal out with food - namely, a McDonald's cheeseburger. Surely whatever was inside wouldn't be able to resist? The cave was in an isolated place, and it was more than likely that it was hungry. It wasn't long before our heroes heard something moving towards them...
NEXT: Something MOVED inside the cave...
It turns out that animals - just like us humans - find it hard to resist fast food. The rescuers' hearts were in their mouths when something slowly began to creep out of the cave after smelling the cheeseburger...
6. Something Moved In The Shadows
Whilst they still weren't able to work out what they were dealing with, they knew that it was hungry. But it was also terrified, and one of the rescuers accidentally spooked it back into the cave. That meant that they had to resort to their original plan...
NEXT: The male rescuer goes back INSIDE the cave...
Animals that are scared are the hardest to rescue. Whatever was inside the cave clearly didn't trust humans, even if they had a tasty McDonald's cheeseburger with them. The male rescuer had to go back inside the cave...
7. Puppies!
The rescuer shone his flashlight inside once again and then the rescuers finally knew what they were dealing with. It was puppies! It looked like there was a small litter of three. But how on earth were they going to get the out of the cave?! They'd crawled into a spot so tight that no amount of digging was going to get the male rescuer in there...
NEXT: The male rescuer left to get EQUIPMENT...
The rescuers, thankfully, had a lot of paraphernalia that could be used to help them in situations like the one they were facing. So the male rescuer slowly crawled back out of the cave. Then something amazing happened...
8. A Puppy Came Out
A puppy came out! This was definitely the boldest of the bunch, and he knew that the man who'd invaded their home had food. A female rescuer scooped him up as soon as she was able to and gave him a bit of cheeseburger!
NEXT: The rescuers had A LOT of questions...
As the first rescued puppy was lifted away to safety, the rescuers had a lot of questions. There was no sign of the puppies' mom being in the area, so they didn't have a clue about what had happened to them. Had a female dog been abandoned, become pregnant, and then given birth to pups in the wild? It was looking likely...
9. What Happened?
But something more tragic could have happened. Had the litter of pups been abandoned because the owners didn't want to look after so many at once? Either way, the pups were alone, and needed somewhere where they could grow up properly, as well as get the food they needed. But first, the rescuer had to crawl back into the cave to save the other pups...
NEXT: It was time to pull the SECOND puppy out of the cave...
The rescuer tried the cheeseburger tactic again, but to no avail. The puppies were terrified of the strangers and stayed as far away as possible. It was a tight squeeze back into the cave. The rescuer brought a snare in with him...
10. Pulling The Pup Out
Once he was close enough to the remaining pups, the rescuer carefully threw the snare around one of the puppy's necks and slowly tried to convince him to come out of the cave. But the pup wriggled and cried. It was hesitant to come any closer...
NEXT: Eventually, the rescuers managed to get the pup OUT...
But thanks to the snare, the rescuer was able to drag the puppy out. Although the puppy cried a little and as he was taken out of the cave, after getting some affectionate strokes from the rescuer, he felt more comfortable and was able to relax...
11. Rescued At Last!
The puppy looked terrified when was finally outside. But we can't blame him. He'd just been dragged out of his home by the neck. The puppies were still so small. They couldn't have been that old at all. After squirming a little, this puppy was starting to calm down. It turned out that this slightly rebellious and overactive canine did have an incredibly lively personality!
NEXT: There were MORE puppies in the cave than the rescuers had first thought..
All this puppy needed was a bit of comfort! And probably some tasty food as well as a good wash. Look how cute he is! What an absolute sweetheart. Once he'd got what he needed, there's no doubt someone would want to give him a home. Once the puppy was lifted to safety, the male rescuer had some SHOCKING news for the others...
12. Eight Puppies Left
The rescuer told the others that whilst he was saving the second puppy, he saw a lot more puppies in the cave than what he'd initially counted. There were eight puppies in there! But how were they going to get them all out? Would another puppy let the rescuer put a snare around its neck? No one knew, but they had to try to save them...
NEXT: Time to save the THIRD puppy...
The rescuer was skilled when it came to rescuing puppies. He slowly crawled back into he gave and was soon able to get the snare around another puppy's neck. It was even more upset than it's brother, crying very loudly as it was dragged out...
13. Puppies' Hideout
As you can tell from this picture, this pup was rolling around in the mud, doing everything it could to avoid the humans who'd invaded its cave. But the rescuers really had to get their thinking caps on to save the others...
NEXT: The puppies went FURTHER into the cave...
Unfortunately, the other pups, after seeing the snare being used, weren't willing to let the rescuer to the same thing to them. It was a pretty big cave and the puppies decided to the only thing they could to avoid the rescuers...
14. Deeper Into The Cave
They crawled even deeper into the cave. At this point, it was looking unlikely that they'd all be rescued. If only the rescuers had been able to tell them that they were doing it for their own good. As you can tell from this picture, it was now such a tight spot that the rescuer could only fit his head into it! There was only one thing left they could try...
NEXT: They devised a very smart plan, but it needed commitment and STRENGTH...
The cave itself was only so big and there was another entrance. The rescuers did the only thing they could do if they wanted to have any chance of saving the remaining puppies. They must have been exhausted...
15. A New Tunnel
The rescuers dug a new tunnel at the other end of the cave so that they could get as close as they could to the puppies who'd hid as deep in the cave as they could. The rescuers' preparation meant that they had everything on hand to give them the best possible chance of saving the pups. Now they had a use for the spade they'd brought with them...
NEXT: The male rescuer crawled in WITHOUT the snare...
The rescuer had to crawl back in without the snare that had scared the pups. The other two rescuers held onto his legs and waited for his signal to pull him back out - hopefully with a puppy in hand. Here's hoping he wasn't too claustrophobic...
16. Hands On Work
It seems ridiculous that they would have to go to these extremes to rescue a group of puppies, but these rescuers were committed and were ready to save the lives of these beautiful small creatures. Suddenly, the man managed to get hold of one in the darkness. "Now!" he shouted, and the others pulled his legs and soon, they had hauled him out of the hole.
NEXT: Would the rescuer be able to save ANOTHER puppy?!
Success! This one cried and complained a bit, but overall, the rescuers were pleased that they had managed to safely recover another of the puppies. Especially as one of the rescuers had to squeeze into such a tight space...
17. Four To Go
The rescuer then crawled back in again and saved another puppy. That was four in total. But there was another three puppies still in there. Amazingly, two of these puppies suddenly ran round to a part of the cave that was closer to the humans. It was time to get the treats out. These puppies hadn't been close when the cheeseburger was used. Maybe all they wanted was food...
NEXT: The rescuers began gently THROWING some treats towards the puppies...
When the rescuers began dropping some treats at one of the entrances of the cave, two little furry faces appeared. The puppies must have been so hungry! It just goes to show that our canine friends can't resist a tasty treat...
18. Food Is Life
One after the other, the two of the three remaining puppies appeared. They were obviously tempted by the treats the rescuers had, but would they be hungry enough to come out of the cave? The rescuers' hearts were in their mouths...
NEXT: Did the FINAL puppies come out of the cave?!
They must have been starving to have came closer to the humans just to get a taste of some of those yummy treats. These pups have certainly had a very dramatic start to their doggie lives. But would the rescuers be able to grab them?!
19. Furry Friends Wanting Food
They did! Very quickly, the rescuers picked them up, checked them over for any wounds, and cuddled them so they felt more comforted and safer around humans at last. That was six puppies rescued. There was definitely two more. Weren't there?
NEXT: These last two were going to be DIFFICULT to get out. Food wasn't persuading them!
There were two puppies left, and they both looked like they were going to be moved at all. It was going to be another crawling in effort. Hopefully the rescuer would be able to hook to the snare around them to pull them out...
20. The Last Two Puppies
These two were absolutely terrified. What was going to happen to them?! They were so frightened and startled by the bright light of the torch that the puppies cowered in the corner at the back of the cave. Would the humans hurt them? Then one of the rescuers managed to get the lead around the first puppy's neck. Slowly, they pulled the seventh puppy out of the cave...
NEXT: The puppy still resisted, but soon it was OUT in the light...
Puppy number seven had eventually made it out of the cave! It took a lot of soft tones and gentle nudges, but the pup was out and finally in safe hands. It must have taken this pup's eyes a few minutes to adjust to the bright light outside...
21. Number Seven
Puppy number seven was finally out of the dark hole! The rescuers only had one left to rescue out of the litter of eight. Wow! A whole eight puppies in one cave! But this one wasn't going to be easy. It was the most frightened pup! The rescuers decided they would take on the same technique they used to get the seventh puppy out and hopefully it would be successful...
NEXT: But the last puppy was certainly the hardest to save...
The eighth puppy resisted the rescue, crying out in its high-pitched squeal. The rescuers' ears must have been sore! A couple of the other puppies had made a few whimpering noises. This was one unhappy pup...
22. The Last Puppy
Fear got the best of this little puppy, and the team knew they would have to rescue it quickly so they wouldn't prolong its distress. This puppy was absolutely terrified. And all of its noises were showing this. This puppy did not want to leave the cave...
NEXT: What happened next was TRULY remarkable...
The last puppy was yelling and crying and rolling around. It was having a puppy tantrum! The cave was its home, and it did not want to leave. The rescuers decided the best way to calm it down was to show it some puppy some love...
23. "Take Him! Take Him!"
Soon, after the rescuers gently stroked the puppy, it calmed down. All it needed was a bit of a cuddle! But the squealing was something that you can't forget in a long time. Finally, all the puppies would be together, and brought back to the rescue home for check ups so that they knew the puppies were all healthy. Then they'd be able to have normal lives...
NEXT: Cuddles to calm the last puppy down proved SUCCESSFUL...
Sometimes all you need is a woman's touch. This was literally the case for puppy number eight, as the comfort this female rescuer gave it proved to be invaluable. It was likely the first time it had interacted with a human...
24. Cuddles And Kindness
Soon, all the puppies were ready to get on their way. Until suddenly, one of the rescuers heard another scuffle. It couldn't be another puppy. Could it?! The male rescuer shone the torch in the cave for one last time, and there, at the very back, he spotted a silent, unmoving puppy. There was a ninth puppy in the litter! Was it okay?! It was time to check it out...
NEXT: The puppy STARED back at its rescuer, unsure what to do...
For the very last time, the rescuers dug a little hole so it was big enough for the male rescuer to squeeze his body into the cave. He flung the lead a few more times, until he finally managed to successfully catch the quiet pup...
25. Another Puppy!
For some reason, this puppy was silent. After all the squealing and crying and flailing of limbs from all the other puppies, this puppy didn't move a muscle, or even bark. Eventually, the male rescuer pulled out the final puppy. The rescuers' mission was complete! They had successfully rescued the entire litter of puppies. All NINE of them!
NEXT: Meanwhile, the noisy puppy was still having a little GRUMP...
It's amazing to think that even puppies have clear personalities, despite being so young and having only just been found. But it was very clear that all nine puppies were very different. Even in the dark of the cave, they'd developed personalities...
26. Squeaky Squeals
It woofed and made little squeaks for his other little friend, and still wiggled its body, despite feeling a lot more comfortable with its rescuers. But the last puppy? This one sat silently, quite happily getting some hugs and love from the rescuers...
NEXT: This is definitely the SWEETEST thing you will see all day, the ninth puppy...
This one stayed quiet throughout the whole entire rescue. It even sat quite happily on its rescuer's lap, enjoying the comfort of human cuddles and a bit of affection. It's a good thing that the rescuers were so thorough...
27. The Quiet One
These puppies hadn't seen a human in their lives ever before. At least, it was highly unlikely and even if they'd met humans before, there's no chance that they'd be able to remember it. Puppies are born both blind and deaf, and it takes them a little while to be able to hear things as well as open their eyes and see for the first time...
NEXT: It was time to take these puppies back to the RESCUE center...
After the most beautiful rescue, the rescuers took the puppies back to their Los Angeles headquarters, where the puppies were fed and checked over. They must have been so glad to have finally gotten out of the cave...
28. After The Rescue
Soon, once they were up to full health and happy, the puppies would all be adopted. But first, it was important to name each and every one of the puppies. But how can you distinguish between nine puppies?! Each puppy was given an individual name tag collar. And they all liked to sleep close together still. You'll LOVE the names they were given...
NEXT: These puppies are pretty darn GORGEOUS...
Naturally, they needed a place to stay in before they found their forever home - and they are pretty happy here right now too. The rescue team were used to dealing with dogs who'd gone though a lot so they'd be well taken care of...
29. Nap Time Together
Look at them all cuddled up on each other, trying to have a little nap as a bunch of sibling puppies! It's the most beautiful thing to see ever, isn't it? Can you spot any of their names too? Well, to check out all the names and faces of each little pup, luckily we have an amazing photo of all nine of them with their names! The rescuers must have had fun naming them all...

Look how adorable all of these little ones are! I absolutely love them all. If I could adopt one of them, I think I would choose... probably Abraham. It's a super cute name, and he looks so solemn!
30. Puppies Galore
As we already know, a few of the rescue team members had been attending a funeral. So one of the puppies was named in honor of the woman that had passed away, which is a wonderful way of honoring a friend's memory! Currently, the puppies are all living together, and now that they are safe they've become more playful than ever...

31. Waiting For Forever Homes
The moment anyone goes to say hello to these little cuties, the bundles of love bound over, eager to greet any visitors with a few licks and puppy hugs. The only thing they are waiting for now is to be adopted by a family who'll cherish them forever...

The rescuers have been back to the caves since in search of the mother of the puppies, but they still are yet to find her. Luckily, it appears that all the puppies were rescued and none were left behind...
32. Happy Families
Who knows what would have happened if the rescue team had never found the puppies. Would they have survived living alone in a cave for much longer? Luckily, the rescuers did a fantastic job, and all the puppies are safe, well fed, and happy!
