Journalist Michael Wolff, speaking on The Daily Beast Podcast, revealed he believes he received the last known message from Epstein the night before his death.

“I believe that I got the last message from him before he died,” Wolff said. “And this came through one of his lawyers on a Friday evening. He died on Saturday morning.

“His message to me hours before this happened was, and it was just in response to me asking how he was, and he said, ‘Still hanging around,’” Wolff recounted.

Epstein, 66, was found hanged in his cell at the Metropolitan Correctional Center on August 10, 2019, while awaiting trial on multiple sex trafficking charges involving underage girls.

His death sparked widespread speculation and fueled conspiracy theories suggesting foul play, as reported by BBC News at the time.

This week, the Department of Justice reiterated its conclusion that there was no evidence Epstein was murdered while in federal custody, reaffirming that the cause of death was suicide.

Wolff, known for his books on political figures including Donald Trump, said he had been in contact with Epstein for years, according to The Guardian.

In 2014, Epstein had even asked Wolff to write his biography, an offer the journalist says he declined, though the two remained loosely in touch.

When asked for his own opinion on the circumstances surrounding Epstein’s death, Wolff said he remained conflicted.

“I don’t know,” he admitted. “He could not, as described, have killed himself,” he said, while also noting: “As the circumstances presented, he could not have been murdered.”

Epstein’s death has remained a source of intense public scrutiny, with questions lingering about the conditions at the facility, lapses in surveillance, and failures by jail staff. Despite repeated investigations and official findings ruling it a suicide, speculation persists about what really happened that night behind bars.

Wolff’s unsettling anecdote, and the eerie double meaning of Epstein’s final words, only adds another layer of intrigue to a case that continues to haunt the public imagination.
