Royal viewers watching King Charles III's televised coronation think they've spotted a shady character they didn't expect to see at the star-studded affair...

...The Grim Reaper!

A dark, shadowy figure was seen walking down a hallway in the background of Westminster Abbey, where the coronation took place, with many viewers taking to Twitter to discuss it.

One person posted footage of the creepy figure on the social media platform, commenting: "Anyone else just notice the Grim Reaper at Westminster Abbey?"

Fellow viewers were also left rather bewildered by the character, with one person jokingly questioning why the reaper was invited: "Why is the Grim Reaper at the Coronation celebrations!!"

Others were more morbid in their thoughts, with another person adding that perhaps it was a bad omen, and that it might mean another coronation could be headed our way, writing: "Next one is going to be sooner, yeah."

A further tweet suggested that the Grim Reaper might have been part of the eerie Nostradamus prediction that this upcoming reign will be relatively short, adding: "Didn't Nostradamus predict two very short reigns around this time. I reckon Charles will die, William will step in but the monarchy gets abolished [sic]."

Aside from the jokes, it is believed that the mysterious shadowy figure was just a member of the clergy taking part in the coronation today and was dressed in ceremonial robes. It just looked a bit eery being seen from a distance

The creepy sighting comes as 74-year-old King Charles III and Queen Camilla - who will now be known as The Queen, rather than the Queen Consort - were crowned today (May 6) in a spectacular ceremony that was watched by hundreds of millions of people.

Celebrities like Lionel Richie and Ant and Dec were among the many stars invited to the event, which kicked off at 10:20AM today as the UK's new monarchs left Buckingham Palace in the Diamond Jubilee State Coach. Over 200 members of the Armed Forces joined the pair, mostly from the Sovereign's Escort of the Household Cavalry Mounted Regiment.

Prince Harry was in attendance, though his wife Meghan Markle remained in California to celebrate their eldest child Archie's fourth birthday today. However, Harry was relegated to the third row following the widely-publicized fallout with dad King Charles and his brother Prince William.

Joining him in the third row were Princess Eugenie, her husband Jack Brooksbank, the Queen's cousin Princess Alexandra, Princess Beatrice, and her husband Edo Mapelli Mozzi.

King Charles III and Queen Camilla left Westminster Abbey at 1:00PM, making the journey back to Buckingham Palace in the 260-year-old Gold State Coach, which the late Queen Elizabeth II famously described as horribly uncomfortable, per The Scottish Sun. A four tons, the carriage has to be pulled by eight horses.

One thing is for sure, however, the Grim Reaper will most certainly not be invited to join.
