Orlando Bloom speaks out about filming threesome with real-life sisters Rooney and Kate Mara
Orlando Bloom recently shared insights about filming an intimate threesome scene alongside real sisters Rooney Mara and Kate Mara for the movie Bucking Fastard. The actor spoke candidly about the experience while presenting the project at the San Sebastian Film Festival in Spain. He appeared at the event with the project's German writer and director, Werner Herzog.
In the film, Bloom plays Gareth Mulroney, a sensitive man who finds himself caught between twin sisters Joan Holbrooke and Jean Holbrooke. The characters are portrayed by real siblings Rooney Mara and Kate Mara. The story takes inspiration from the lives of identical twin sisters Freda Chaplin and Greta Chaplin.
Bloom reflected on the emotional tone of the scene and how the actors approached the moment on set. He noted that the experience required a careful balance between the physical and emotional elements of the characters.
Directors stepping back
Werner Herzog also shared his perspective on directing the intimate moment between the three actors. The veteran filmmaker explained that there are specific times during production when a director must give the cast space to navigate the material naturally.
He recalled telling Bloom, "[There is] such simplicity to the characters and [their] carnal desires, but also an innocence to the sisters," Bloom, 49, said, according to Variety. Bloom added, "My character, the ‘Bucking Fastard,’ is sensitive too, and he’s quite quickly out of his depth in some ways." He noted that the threesome was a "very sincere sort of moment" that he, Rooney and Kate created together.
Herzog remembered giving specific guidance on set. He recalled telling Bloom, "You are in bed, and you have two women in your arms. How you deal with it, I cannot give instructions." Herzog described the moment as "beautiful," adding that the scene has "such charm and depth."
Festival debut and personal updates
The movie officially made its debut at the Venice Film Festival on September 3. Rooney Mara, Kate Mara, and Bloom walked the red carpet together for the event. For the appearance, Rooney wore Louis Vuitton, Kate chose Armani Prive, and Bloom selected a suit by Zegna.
Outside of his professional work, Bloom was recently seen spending time on vacation with his daughter, Daisy Dove, and an unidentified woman. He posted images from the trip to Instagram on September 12 without revealing the woman's identity. He was previously linked to Swiss model Luisa Laemmel after the pair were seen leaving the Super Bowl together in February. Bloom shares his six year old daughter Daisy with ex fiancée Katy Perry, who confirmed their separation in 2025 after nearly a decade together.
