A woman in the US has responded to the backlash she received on social media after sharing of video of her showing her pet turkey the family's roasted bird in the oven.

Taking to TikTok under the handle '@our10acres', Kelly Byers' most recent post has amassed over 38 million views in just one day. However, not everybody one the social media platform saw the funny side of her video.

In the short clip, Kelly can be seen talking to her pet turkey, who is named Big Red. The post shows Big Red standing near the open oven, where another (albeit dead and plucked) turkey can be seen roasting away ahead of a Thanksgiving meal.

Kelly asks Big Red: "What you doing, bub?" Before adding: "It's okay - you don't know him."

Check out the video below:

The video sparked a debate in the comments section, with more than 93,000 replies being posted (as of this writing).

On one hand, many people could see the funny side of the video - with many TikTokers making the same joke pretending that Big Red did, in fact, know the turkey in the oven.

However, others went on to describe the video as "messed up", "wrong", and "not ok".

One person added: "I'm not a vegan but videos like this make me want to become one lol".

Another added: "This is actually heartbreaking. Glad to be vegan".

In response to the negative comments, Byers took to the comments section to put people's minds at ease about the joke, writing: "Just adding, Big Red was NOT traumatized... he was mad I wouldn't let him eat it."

And in response to one TikToker calling the video "kinda sad", Byers said: "It's ok to feel that way. If it helps, that's a store-bought turkey & Big Red wanted to eat it. Turkeys are curious, but have no concept of ovens."

The video comes after singer Billie Eilish asked her fans to reconsider eating turkey for Thanksgiving this year.
