Nathan “Nate” Kane Mathers, Eminem’s half-brother, has spoken out following the passing of their mother, Debbie Nelson.
Nelson, 69, died after a battle with advanced lung cancer, and Nate shared his thoughts just one day after the news broke.
“Hatred and mixed emotions today,” the 38-year-old wrote in an Instagram Story on Tuesday, reacting to the loss and the complicated history he shares with his mother.
Eminem — born Marshall Bruce Mathers III — has not yet commented publicly on his mother’s death. TMZ first reported the news earlier this week.
Both brothers have had a tumultuous relationship with Nelson over the years. Nate, who was born to Nelson and Fred Samara Jr., was placed into foster care at just eight years old. When he turned 16, Eminem adopted him, solidifying their close bond as siblings.
Nelson also gave birth to Eminem during her relationship with Marshall Bruce Mathers Jr., roughly 14 years before Nate’s arrival.
Eminem has often been open about their rocky relationship, channeling those emotions into his music. His 2002 track 'Cleanin’ Out My Closet' famously detailed his grievances with Nelson.
In a rare public statement about their relationship, Nelson shared her perspective during a 2008 interview with The Village Voice. “I’m not ever gonna give up on my kids. I won’t give up on anybody,” she said. “There’s hope for everybody. It’s a matter of just basically swallowing your pride. It’s like a cashed check. It’s over, it’s done. You need to move on.”
The status of Eminem and Nelson’s relationship at the time of her death remains unclear. However, the rapper did express regret over their fractured bond in his 2013 song 'Headlights.'
In the track, he rapped about wanting to make peace, admitting, “My mom probably got it the worst,” and reflecting on the pain caused by their estrangement.
He also acknowledged her efforts, adding, “I was mad I didn’t get the chance to thank you for being my mom and my dad.”
Reports suggest Nelson had been struggling with her health for some time. In September, InTouch Weekly revealed she had only a “very limited amount of time” left, citing a source who said she was spending her remaining days between a cancer center and family members.
The same source suggested that communication between Nelson and Eminem had been non-existent for years.
“He’s good to his mom. He makes sure he takes care of her, but they don’t really talk,” the insider shared. “It would be good for both of them [to communicate]. This could give them the chance to reconcile.”
As the family navigates the loss, Nate’s reaction reflects the complex emotions tied to Nelson’s passing.
Whether Eminem chooses to address the news publicly remains to be seen, but his music has long provided insight into the complicated family dynamics he has faced.

Hailie Mathers, Eminem's 25-year-old daughter, has posted a rare picture of her and her boyfriend - and devoted fans are warning him not to "hurt" her.
Eminem is a famously outspoken individual who's had countless feuds in his time, with the likes of Mariah Carey, Machine Gun Kelly and Christina Aguilera having butted heads with the 'Lose Yourself' rapper.
Heck, even Kimberly Ann Scott, Hailie's mom, has been put on blast by the performer multiple times in his music.
In his song 'Kim', for example, he famously rapped about a scenario in which he "murders" his ex-wife.
So, it's no secret that Eminem isn't someone you'd be in a hurry to get on the wrong side of.
And that's why when Hailie took to Instagram to share what was nothing more than a harmless insight into her relationship with her boyfriend Evan McClintock - stans of her famous father rushed to the comments to warn Evan to be on his best behavior with her.
One person wrote: "Dont hurt her. [Whatever] you do. Your life will go down in history."
Another showed their concern, writing: "Imagine bringing your man home just to meet Shady at the door."
A third individual remarked: "Boy don't you ever hurt Hailie or shady is will rockabye you broski. [sic]"
Yet another person chimed in to write: "Bro u better watch your moves. [sic]."
A final commenter shared: "He must be so afraid to do something wrong when being around her father."
Hailie captioned the sweet snap: "I rarely share my feed, but when I do I'm happy it’s with you." The photo, which has since racked up over 196,000 likes, features the couple lounging together in an outdoor area.
Per the Daily Mail, Hailie and Evan started dating in 2016 after they met while studying at Michigan State University. Despite being a hugely popular social media influencer with 2.1 million followers at the time of writing, Hailie tends to keep details of her relationship under wraps.

As anyone who’s ever listened to Eminem’s music can attest to, the rapper and his mother haven’t always had the greatest relationship.
In fact, so strained was their relationship that Debbie Mathers once filed a $10 million defamation lawsuit against son Marshall after claiming he’d slandered her on the Slim Shady LP and in various interviews.
The beef goes all the way back to 1999, when Debbie took offense at her son’s claim on his debut single ‘My Name Is’ that “my mom smokes more d*pe than I do”.
"I told her I'd grow up to be a famous rapper, make a record about doin' drugs and name it after her," the lyrics continue.
But it didn’t end there. Eminem repeatedly trash-talked his mom in interviews during this stage of his career, claiming that she never worked and was always trying to scam money from welfare, per MTV.
The two would always get into fights when they were younger, and according to Eminem, his mother would frequently kick him out of the house.
Clearly these remarks got under Debbie’s skin, and in 1999, she filed a lawsuit against her son, demanding a cool $10 million in compensation after claiming he was lying about both his upbringing and her alleged substance abuse, The Sun reports.
In response to the suit, Em’s lawyer Paul Rosenberg said in a statement, per Rolling Stone: "Eminem's life is reflected in his music.
"Everything he has said can be verified as true. Truth is an absolute defense to a claim of defamation. This lawsuit does not come as a surprise to Eminem.
"His mother has been threatening to sue him since the success of his single 'My Name Is'. It is merely the result of a lifelong strained relationship between him and mother.
"Regardless, it is still painful to be sued by your mother and therefore the lawsuit will only be dealt with through legal channels."
Surprisingly enough, Debbie Mathers actually won the lawsuit- but it didn’t all go according to plan.
Instead of the $10 million she’d initially filed for, the judge awarded her just $25,000 in compensation.
And to make matters worse, her lawyer ended up pocketing $23,354 of the total settlement, leaving her with just over $1,600 once the dust had settled.
In an interview with ABC News after the trial had concluded, her lawyer Fred Gibson rubbed even more salt in the wound by claiming that Debbie was such a nightmare client that he should have been entitled to even more of the settlement.
He said: "This is not the last laugh because she was the most high-maintenance client I've had in my legal career. "That amount was a far cry to the time I dedicated to her personally and to the legal action."
As for Eminem himself, he responded to the defeat by penning ‘Cleanin Out My Closet’, a blistering and deeply personal attack on his mother which served as the second single from his 2002 album ‘The Eminem Show’.
Time heals all wounds though, and in 2015 Em penned an apology song to his mother, ‘Headlights’, in which he expresses his regrets over the way he treated her during his younger days.
Although he remains estranged to his mother to this day, he stated that he now cringes whenever he hears ‘Cleanin' Out My Closet’ on the radio and no longer performs the song at live shows.

While being Eminem's daughter would undoubtedly have its benefits, it would also be pretty weird. Slim Shady's music isn't exactly known for its timid nature, and growing up listening to your dad rapping about how much he wants to kill your mom can't have been ideal. However, for Hailie Mathers, this was the reality of her situation.

Hailie, the subject of many Eminem songs, has grown up since the days of the Marshall Mathers LP and has now graduated from university and got herself a boyfriend.
Yep, some unlucky/lucky guy has had to go through the rigmarole that is meeting your girlfriend's dad and being confronted with Eminem.

However, while you may think Eminem would do all that he could to intimidate the boy, it turns out that the father approves. A source close to Hailie said:
"Marshall was just hitting the big time at the age Evan is now, making headlines for his shocking lyrics and toxic relationship with Kim. Evan studied economics and is a keen golfer, there's a huge difference!
"Hailie's family have welcomed Evan, they are a fantastic young couple who love cosy nights in rather than hard partying."
Aside from focusing on her relationship, Hailie has also been focusing on upping her Instagram game - with the 22-year-old having close to 1 million followers on the social media site.

Asked what her plans are now that she has finished college, Hailie said:
"I'm not sure yet, it's kind of up in the air, still.
"People have been reaching out through [Instagram], as I don't have any [management]."
While her father achieved worldwide fame through rap, Hailie is not interested in a musical career and is not even sure if she wants to live in the spotlight. A source close to her said:
"Hailie wanted to test the water by sharing some of her life on Instagram but is not yet ready to fully put herself out there.

"She enjoys keeping a low profile, walking her dog and going to fitness classes, hanging out with her friends and holidaying with Evan.
"She had a normal life at university and was in a sorority, she was popular and focused hard on her studies."
Hailie now resides in a four bedroom property in Detroit and regularly visits her mother and two half-siblings. The 22-year-old also maintains that she remains close to her father, saying: "Of course, we are very close."

Eminem, on his part, has rarely spoken about his daughter in public. However, back in 2002, he admitted that she is his main source of inspiration.
"She has been my main source of drive and motivation, especially when she was first born. I didn't have a career yet, I didn't have money, I didn't have a place to live. I think that kicked me in the a** harder knowing, 'How am I going to raise her?'
"She's always been the driving force for me to stay busy, stay focused, always been my number one reason for fear of failure. I can't fail. I can't have her grow up and not be able to say, 'My dad succeeded'.
"I talk about her a lot, the truth is she is all I got in this world. If everything ended tomorrow, she's all that I have."
It will be interesting what path Hailie's life takes. But, undoubtedly, because of her family name, she'll have opportunities that are ill-afforded to average folk.
