Cate Blanchett has sparked backlash on social media after expressing her shock over Margot Robbie's taste in music.

During an appearance on The Graham Norton Show that aired on January 13, the 32-year-old Babylon actress revealed to the host that she had a "goth, very emo" phase at some point in her life.

Robbie said that she "dyed my hair black and only cut it with a razor blade" which shocked her fellow Australian actress who was also present in the interview.

The 53-year-old Tár star interjected while the Oscar-nominated actress was explaining her love for heavy metal music and asked: "Does anyone like heavy metal music? Was that something you genuinely liked?"

Watch the interview below:

Robbie confirmed that she "genuinely" liked that genre of music and still does before Blanchett joked: "Do you like monster trucks and things like that?"

Despite seeming a little mortified by her teenage antics, the actress - who will star as Barbie in the forthcoming film - did not shy away from her passion for the music she grew up loving.

She then admitted that she has never had as many people recognize her as they did at the Slipknot concert she attended while starring in the Australian soap opera Neighbours.

"I remember going to a Slipknot concert, and at the time I was on Neighbours. I've never had more people come up to me - ever - than at a Slipknot concert," she said. "It was so unexpected. And they worried about all the characters. They were so invested in Neighbours and Slipknot."

"It wasn’t monster trucks and Slipknot, it was Neighbours and Slipknot," she then quipped, describing the convergence of people who liked the hard-hitting music as well as the TV show.

The 59-year-old TV show host then joked: "That’s quite the Venn diagram," prompting a laugh from the guests and audience members.

The Hollywood A-lister laughed and held firm, even in the face of some gentle ribbing from her fellow guest. However, many users took to Twitter to criticize Blanchett for her remarks during the interview.

One user wrote: "As a metalhead, this is the worst thing I've ever heard someone ask about metal. Smh Cate Blanchett. Do better."

Another user remarked: "The disrespect from Cate Blanchett actually blew my mind. She always seemed like a graceful and accepting person but the whole 'does anybody actually like heavy metal?' Like damn Galadriel, thought you were better than that."

A third commented: "Margot Robbie proving once again that heavy metal music is awesome! Also, I love how Cate Blanchett has NO clue about what metal fans are like IRL."

A fourth said: "I don't think it was sneering, but I did find Cate Blanchett's attitude kinda weird given that she played one of the most metal-looking characters I've seen on film lol"

Meanwhile, Robbie has previously shared her love of metal as a teenager during interviews such as on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon and even sent high praise to Slipknot at the time.

"I went to a Slipknot concert and to this day it was probably the best concert I’ve ever gone to. They’re just amazing performers - even if you don’t like metal, I think you would appreciate a Slipknot concert, 'cause it's just incredible to watch," she said.
