The 31-year-old tragically passed away on October 16 in Buenos Aires, Argentina, after falling from a third-floor balcony at a hotel in the Palermo area.

Payne had been staying at the Hotel CasaSur when the tragedy took place, with hotel management having called authorities to report their concerns for his safety shortly before he tragically fell to his death.

Authorities pronounced the singer dead at the scene, saying he had suffered a “very serious injury” to the base of the skull, per The Guardian.

The forensic medical corps also added that the former One Direction member's tragic passing was caused by “multiple traumas” and “internal and external hemorrhage” resulting from the fatal fall.

In addition to this, toxicology tests found that when he died, Payne had traces of alcohol, cocaine, and a prescription antidepressant in his body, according to prosecutors.

In the wake of Payne's heartbreaking death, Buenos Aires police launched an investigation into the matter, recently revealing new details about a watch he was wearing before he died.

The 31-year-old was allegedly wearing a Rolex watch just hours before his death but after raiding the room the star was staying at, it was discovered that the timepiece was allegedly missing.

Sources told local news outlet La Nacion: "We know, from images that were analyzed, that Payne was wearing a Rolex on the day of his death."

They continued: "He was wearing it [on] one of his hands and he had it for at least two to three hours before he jumped into the void. We looked for [it] in the room at the CasaSur hotel where he was staying and we couldn’t find [it]."

The authorities also did not discover the watch at nine homes that were raided in connection with Payne's death, per the Daily Mail.

"The watch was searched for at the homes of the people accused of the crimes of abandonment of a person and supply and facilitation of narcotics and at the homes of the two women who were with Payne in the room the afternoon of his death," a source added.

It comes shortly after it was announced that three people had been arrested in connection with the death of the singer.

Two hotel employees and an Argentine businessman - a reported acquaintance of Payne - have now been apprehended. It remains unclear if these detentions are connected to the initial investigations.

The public prosecutor's office in Argentina has disclosed that the three individuals were charged with "abandonment of a person followed by death" and supply and facilitation of narcotics in connection with the death of Payne, cited by The Mirror.

They said the crimes were punishable by a prison sentence of up to 15 years on conviction.
