A lot of hip hop is jam-packed full of references, whether its callbacks to the artist's upbringing, the general culture of the moment, or other people in the music industry. And those references aren't always the nicest, either. After all, this is how some of the most brutal of feuds happen. Sometimes, it's not even limited to one line, but becomes an entire diss track.
For instance, Pusha T put out a brutal track earlier this year targeting none other than Drake. His long-awaited album Daytona received much critical acclaim when it was released in May, but most of the internet became obsessed with the shots fired at Drake.
In the last track on the album, Infrared, he pointed to the rumours that Drake has been using ghostwriters for some of his biggest hits, rapping: "How could you ever right these wrongs when you don't even write your songs?"
Drake hit back with his own diss track, Duppy Freestyle, and that's when things got real. In Pusha T's The Story of Adidon, the rapper he revealed to the world that Drake had a son, who Pusha claims he's neglected:
"Since you name-dropped my fiancée /Let 'em know who you chose as your Beyoncé
"Sophie knows better, ask your baby mother / Cleaned her up for IG, but the stench is on her
"A baby's involved, it's deeper than rap /We talkin' character, let me keep with the facts
"You are hiding a child, let that boy come home."
After that, it looked like no other feud in the genre was going to top it in 2018 - but Cardi B and Nicki Minaj are trying their best. The two have had beef for a long time, but it reached a peak this year, when Cardi started a fight with her nemesis on the red carpet of the Harper's Bazaar ICONS party last month.
Since then, the two have traded verbal blows online, and Minaj even found away to throw shade using her own merchandise (two birds with one stone). Now, it looks like Cardi is not looking to move on from the feud, and is in fact preparing to address Nicki in an upcoming song.
According to TMZ, the rapper has reportedly recorded some new music with lyrics that go straight for the throat, leaving her team "divided"- with some of the team thinking that the lyrics shouldn't ever see the light of day.
According to TMZ, Cardi has recorded new music with lyrics that go in on Nicki—but the thing is, her team's reportedly "divided" about whether or not lyrics on the track should even see the light of day.
The outlet have reported that some of Cardi's team think that "the lyrics would actually benefit Nicki by putting the spotlight on her," and that "she's already eclipsed Nicki," so doesn't need to say anything further. Meanwhile, Cardi is allegedly dead set on keeping the diss track.
Given that Cardi swept up three awards at the AMAs the other week, and has attained multiple weeks-long number one singles this year, she probably could let it go - but it looks like she still has something to get off her chest.
