Chris Evans is facing backlash online for his tweets during the Capitol riots last Wednesday (January 6).

The Captain America star posted a series of tweets about the events as they unfolded at the White House, which would have been unsurprising for fans of the actor who know that he is a famously outspoken critic of Donald Trump.

"I'm speechless," he said in his first tweet.

"Just think of the carnage had they not been white," he added, seemingly referring to the disproportional backlash people of color faced during the BLM protests last summer.

While these tweets themselves did not go down badly on the social media website, it was the actor's third tweet that attracted controversy.

He wrote: "So many people enabled this."

Now, while it is true that the events of last Wednesday were enabled by a lot of people, with many people placing blame on from Republicans to white supremacists to President Trump himself, Twitter users took umbrage with Evans' tweet, suggesting that he has helped to play his part throughout his career.

One Twitter user shared a series of pictures of Evans with police and Republican politicians, including Ted Cruz and Dan Crenshaw, writing: "It's you. You’re so many people."

Anther similarly shared a picture of the actor with a group of police officers, writing alongside it: "exactly, Chris".

Twitter users also pointed out that the actor's association with the military also made him responsible, with Newsweek noting that the Pentagon was involved in the creation of Marvel's Iron Man.

In fact, people present at the Capitol riots were photographed in knock-off Marvel merchandise.

Alongside a screenshot proving their claims, another Twitter user wrote: "The MCU is literally funded by the US military."

Another quoted Evans' tweet and wrote: "i can name 5 films with military/cops and/or n4zi propaganda you've been in [sic]."

The actor's creation of the website A Starting Point, a political platform that presents the views of both the Republicans and the Democrats, was also slammed by Twitter users.

One wrote: "hahaha remember when u took pictures w ted cruz and dan crenshaw and police offers and created a whole platform to offer the benefit of doubt to a disingenuous 'both sides' argument all under the guise of creating dialogue in a country where that stopped being possible yrs ago? [sic]."
