After months of turning heads on red carpets, Wuthering Heights star Margot Robbie has received serious backlash over her 2026 Met Gala look.
Spectators online branded her simple golden gown “boring” and claimed her look was the “biggest disappointment of the night”.
Many thought that the strapless Chanel dress with a drop hem and mid-length ruffled train, which, according to Vogue, took Chanel atelier 761 hours to complete, did not cut it for this year’s gala theme, ‘fashion is art’.
The dress, paired with gold stilettos and bold yellow-gold jewelry, created an undeniably classy look, but the Australian actress was more than overshadowed by the other A-list attendees.
Critics flocked to social media to share their thoughts on the dress that was more than underwhelming in comparison to the looks she wore for February’s Wuthering Heights press tour, which saw her walk the red carpet in a gown made of hair.
One fan wrote on X, “Love Margot, but all of her Wuthering Heights promo looks would have been better suited and perfect for this year's theme!”
While another added, “What she wore in Wuthering Heights was all art, and this has no art compared to that.”
However, as an ambassador for Chanel, it's likely that Robbie had little say in her gala look and was contractually obliged to wear something chosen by the French fashion house.
In the face of the criticism she received, Robbie’s friend and co-star came to her defence, paving the way for others to follow suit and praise her “sensational look”.
Actor, comedian and wrester Paul Walter Hauser reposted a picture of Robbie in her golden gown with a scathing caption about the other celeb attendees, which said, “One of the only people at the Met Gala who didn’t look like a self-obsessed psychopath.”
The actor starred alongside Robbie in her 2017 film, I, Tonya and it seems the pair have remained close ever since, with him using his platform to defend the Barbie star and spark others to do so too.
Under the X post one person commented, “She was the best dressed hands down. That colour is lovely on her.”
Another added, “Margot always looks classy. She can do no wrong.”
