Social media users are reacting to a video of Jacob Elordi's 'gross' interaction with his mom on a red carpet.
On Wednesday (January 28), the 28-year-old actor, best known for his role in Euphoria, made an appearance at the Los Angeles premiere of Wuthering Heights.
Elordi, who stars as Heathcliff in the upcoming film adaptation of Emily Brontë's classic 1847 novel, attended the event alongside his mother, Melissa Elordi.
However, their red carpet moment quickly sparked a viral conversation after an unusual act was caught on camera.
A Red Carpet Moment That Sparked a Debate
While the premiere excited fans about the star-studded cast, including Margot Robbie, who plays Catherine, one particular moment between Elordi and his mom caught the attention of social media.
A video surfaced showing the actor spitting his chewing gum into his mother's hand.
The clip quickly gained traction, with many users weighing in on the awkward interaction.
One person wrote: "Gross but I don’t have kids BUT it looks like she told him to do it and he was like 'well, here you go mum' with a big smile on his face. It’s a cute moment and non-issue, she probably already told him not to chew gum and here he is doing it on the red carpet lol."
Others defended the moment, with one commenter pointing out that "Moms tend to be immune" to things like that, while another shared: "I’m 27 and my mom would do this for me right now. It’s just a mom thing."
Another user clarified: "He didn’t even spit it out. He took it out of his mouth and put it in her hand. If he had spat it out, that would have been disrespectful and gross."
Behind the Scenes of Wuthering Heights
Despite the gum incident overshadowing the red carpet, fans are eagerly anticipating the release of Wuthering Heights, which tells the love story between Heathcliff (Elordi) and Catherine (Robbie).
In an interview with Vogue Australia, both stars reflected on the meaningful moments they shared on set.
The Barbie actress fondly recalled a thoughtful Valentine’s Day gesture by Elordi, who filled her room with roses, a note from Heathcliff, and even a "little tombstone thing" to symbolize the characters' tragic love story.
She was impressed by Elordi’s thoughtfulness, noting, "I remember thinking on Valentine's Day, oh he's probably a very good boyfriend, 'cause there's a lot of thoughtfulness in this."
Elordi, however, didn’t expect any special treatment in return and joked, "I felt like I beat you," referring to Robbie’s lack of a grand gesture. The 35-year-old was quick to agree, saying, "You definitely beat me. Yours was so epic."
It seems like the connection between the stars went beyond the script, as in a recent interview with Fandango, Elordi shared that there were moments on set where the chemistry between them felt undeniably real.
“There’d be a moment where we’d be running hand-in-hand through the moors, maybe not even in the scene, just setting it up, where I’d look across at her, and she’d be looking at me, and you really realized you are looking at Catherine, and she was looking at Heathcliff,” he said.
“In that moment, we really were a part of their love, for real," he added.
Wuthering Heights is scheduled for release on February 13.
