Fans notice tragic detail in RJ Mitte's Instagram after Breaking Bad star dies aged 34
Fans across the globe are mourning the loss of actor RJ Mitte, best known for playing Walter White Jr. on AMC’s hit drama series Breaking Bad.
Following the news of his death, social media users began revisiting his online profiles, where many noticed a poignant line written in his Instagram bio.
The profile features a familiar quote: “It's better to light a candle than curse the darkness.”
Although the quote sparked immediate discussion online, it had actually been displayed in his bio for a long period of time and most likely doesn't bear any direct connection to his mental state at the time of his passing.
The actor, who was 34 years old, passed away on October 12, in Brownsville, Texas. Authorities confirmed that he died by suicide, with Cameron County Justice of the Peace Cyndi Hinojosa declaring him dead at approximately 1:30PM local time at what was believed to be his home.
Fan reactions to his Instagram bio
Despite the longevity of the quote in his bio, fans shared their grief under news threads and online discussions. The subtle message struck an emotional chord with people processing the loss of the actor.
Under a post announcing his passing on Reddit, one user wrote: “His Insta bio says ‘it’s better to light a candle than curse the darkness’ :(“
A different user responded to the comment, writing: “I hope he gets many candles lit in his honour. I’m sorry he won’t be there to enjoy their flame.”
RJ Mitte's acting legacy
Born on August 21, 1992, in Jackson, Mississippi, Mitte earned widespread recognition for portraying Walter White Jr., a role that highlighted his own experiences living with cerebral palsy.
Beyond his success on Breaking Bad, which earned him a Screen Actors Guild Award alongside his castmates in 2014, he starred in projects such as Triumph, Love Me Dead, Westhampton, and Switched at Birth.
Outside of acting, Mitte was a dedicated philanthropist and activist. He served as an ambassador for United Cerebral Palsy and Shriners Children's, while also leading The Mitte Foundation as president to support community initiatives.
His representatives released a statement confirming his passing: “It is with profound sadness that we share the tragic passing of beloved actor, philanthropist, and passionate disability rights advocate RJ Mitte.”
