Days after news broke that the 42-year-old died unexpectedly, officials have ruled his death a suicide.

Police Confirm Cause of Death but Investigation Remains Open

A spokesperson for the Boca Raton Police Department confirmed to PEOPLE that Spodick’s death was officially classified as a suicide. However, the department noted that the case itself remains open, and no additional details surrounding the circumstances have been released. Authorities have not commented on any timeline for closure.

News of Spodick’s passing was first shared by loved ones through a GoFundMe campaign created to help his mother navigate the mounting costs associated with funeral arrangements and other immediate financial burdens.

His family described his passing as “sudden and heartbreaking,” emphasizing their shock and devastation.

“The world was brighter with Chad in it,” she added. “Those who knew him felt the warmth of his heart every single day.”

Fundraiser Helps Support Spodick’s Mother After Tragic Loss

The GoFundMe, established to support Spodick’s mother, Felice Harwood, has raised more than $27,700 at the time of writing.

Chad Spodick rose to public attention in 2016 as a contestant on Finding Prince Charming, Logo TV’s groundbreaking all-gay dating competition hosted by Lance Bass.

He competed alongside 12 other men for the heart of bachelor Robert Sepúlveda Jr. but voluntarily exited the show after six weeks.

Later, Spodick claimed publicly that Sepúlveda attempted to pursue him and other contestants after filming ended, a controversy that drew additional media attention at the time, according to Just Jared.

Nearly a decade later, fans of the series continue to remember Spodick for his charisma, vulnerability, and authenticity.
