John Amos' daughter has claimed that she found out about her father's death more than a month after his passing.

On Tuesday (October 1), it was reported that the legendary star - best known for playing the patriarch James Evans Sr. on Good Times - sadly died at the age of 84.

The heartbreaking news was revealed in a statement shared by the famed actor's son, Kelly Christopher "K.C." Amos, who also confirmed that his father died on August 21 in Los Angeles of natural causes.

"It is with heartfelt sadness that I share with you that my father has transitioned," Kelly penned. "He was a man with the kindest heart and a heart of gold… and he was loved the world over. Many fans consider him their TV father. He lived a good life. His legacy will live on in his outstanding works in television and film as an actor."

Hours after Kelly's announcement, the late actor's daughter, Shannon, disclosed on Instagram that she didn’t know her father had died until she read about it in the press.

"I am without words…Our family has received the heartbreaking news that my Dad, John Allen Amos, Jr., transitioned on August 21st," the 58-year-old wrote. "We are devastated and left with many questions about how this happened 45 days ago, learning about it through the media like so many of you."

She penned alongside a video of her dancing with her famous father: “This should be a time of honoring and celebrating his life, yet we are struggling to navigate the wave of emotions and uncertainties surrounding his passing. Still, there is some semblance of peace in knowing my father is finally free."

Shannon concluded that her family appreciates the "outpouring of love, calls, and texts," adding: "Please continue to hold our family in your thoughts and prayers. Thank you."

The prolific actor, who was also known for his roles in Roots, Coming to America, and The West Wing, reportedly had a tumultuous relationship with his daughter.

Last June, Shannon claimed that her dad suffered "elder abuse” at the hands of an unnamed “caregiver." She wrote in a since-deleted GoFundMe page: “The cruelty inflicted upon my dad leaves me questioning what kind of human could commit such acts," cited by The New York Post.

A month later, Amos accused his daughter of elder abuse, saying in a video shared by K.C: “[Shannon] would be the primary suspect - if you would... I don’t know if that’s the right term to use or not."

"But she’s the one that I would attribute my elderly abuse to. It’s definitely a case of elderly abuse," he added.

A couple of months later, Amos opened up about his "acrimonious relationship” with his daughter in an interview with PEOPLE.

“Right now, it is somewhat acrimonious, but never mind what you might read or hear about in the paper or on this medium or that medium platform,” he said in December 2023.

The actor shared that they are "still family" and "love each other," noting: “That is my daughter, my first child... I love her. K.C. loves his sister.

"We just have, I guess, what might be best described in the tabloids is an acrimonious relationship, but everything heals in time, and the love is still there," he explained, adding at the time that he believes “all families go through trials and tribulations of some sort.”
