It's no secret that people on social media absolutely love throwing shade. Put up any picture and complete strangers will scrutinise you from the top of your head to the tip of your toes, with no mercy shown. One person who isn't here for it though? Julia Roberts.

The A-lister made Instagram a better place when she joined the picture-sharing site back in June under the handle @juliaroberts, and has been delighting us with her private pics ever since.

However, everyone knows you have to take the good with the bad when it comes to social media - and this became clear when a troll attempted to bash the Pretty Woman actress on Instagram recently.

The drama started when a film costume collector called Nick - through an account named @thevintagecostumecollecter - decided to upload two pictures of Julia and Joan Crawford wearing similar dresses side-by-side and asked his followers "who wore it best?" The competition was on, with many Instagrammers offering up their opinions.

Most people were playing nice in the comment section, with many admitting that you couldn't fault either star. That was until one social media user expressed a dislike for Julia's nail polish, writing: "Joan Crawford looks way better in my opinion more classic and refined and Julia is wearing ugly black nail polish!"

Although it certainly wasn't the meanest comment in the world, it seems it was harsh enough to catch the attention of the Eat Pray Love actress herself, with 50-year-old swooping in to defend her choice and clap back at the hater.

"It is in fact a navy polish with garnets crystals as a grounding accent. In case you would like to edit your comment from ‘ugly black nail polish’ to ugly navy polish with Garnet crystals. Just sayin’ ??," the mother-of-three wrote in the comment section.

Aaaaand welcome to the new queen of Insta! Julia is rivalling power couple Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds when it comes to roasting trolls on social media there. Lesson learned: never slag off Julia's nail polish.

Many fans were impressed with the 50-year-old quick reply, with one user going by the name of @kitikobain putting "@juliaroberts this might be the greatest thing I have seen all day! I personal love 'ugly black nail polish'. You ugly navy polish is pretty great too ?". Another by the account name of @bee_wallin agreed, putting: "@juliaroberts you look like an absolute goddess as usual and I love that 'ugly black nail polish'".

In other Julia news, she recently opened up a little about her marriage to American cinematographer Danny Moder - something she doesn't normally do - naming him "an awesome human being" in an interview with Extra.

Several news outlets have been insisting the couple are on the rocks in recent months, but the My Best Friend's Wedding star shut down rumours when she was asked about joining Instagram. "Well, you know what? He's an awesome human being," she said. "We have so much fun... I said to him — we were lying in bed — I go to him, 'Can I post this picture?' 'Cause that's a weird question. New to my lexicon. And he was like, 'Okay.'"

It's good to hear Danny is keeping Julia up to speed with all of the social media madness. However, judging from her clapback to that troll, she doesn't need any assistance at all.
