Although it might not seem that way from the outside, the only people who can really judge a relationship are the people in that relationship. Everyone's got different needs and wants from a prospective partner, so if it works and nobody's getting hurt, then who are we to judge?

Much in that same vein, Kate Beckinsale has hit back at David Spade for his comments about her relationship with Pete Davidson, responding to a tongue-in-cheek comment on her Instagram in totally savage fashion. It all came about after Beckinsale, 45, posted what seemed to be an innocent video on Instagram.

Kate Beckinsale is currently filming in South Africa for her latest role in the Amazon series The Widow, and that's why she's getting to know a little baby cheetah, who lay in her lap and licked the palm of her hand as she played with it.

"So many extraordinary experiences on #thewidow but this and seeing Charles Dance striding powerfully down a corridor in only a hotel robe and mirror aviators are among the standouts #thewidow #amazonprimevideo," Beckinsale captioned the post.

Most of us would see the video and think about how adorable the cub looked as Kate Beckinsale cradled it, but David Spade, of Just Shoot Me and Emperor's New Groove fame, had something entirely different in mind.

"You like them young!" Spade, 54, quipped, obviously referring to Beckinsale's relationship with 25-year-old Pete Davidson, 20 years her junior. But, judging from the rest of his comment, where he said "(Now don’t fight back and roast me just quietly stew and take the hit.)", he probably knew a response was about to arrive, and arrive it did.

Kate Beckinsale didn't have to work too hard to come up with a witty, pithy response, responding to David Spade: "never gonna happen grandpa [sic]", she said almost right away, and it's proof that Kate Beckinsale is feeling mighty confident in her relationship with Pete Davidson.

A source from PEOPLE confirmed what we'd already figured out by this point: the pair are getting on pretty well. "She's very happy with Pete," said the source. "They have really similar senses of humor and she’s always laughing with him."

Pete Davidson, it seems, is having a pretty good time as well: after the pair were spotted getting very close at a hockey game earlier this month, he confirmed the dating rumours on the sketch show Saturday Night Live, and had his own response to any critics over the age gap.

"Apparently people have a crazy fascination with our age difference... So if you have questions about a relationship with a big age difference, just ask Leonardo DiCaprio, Jason Statham, Michael Douglas, Richard Gere, Jeff Goldblum, Scott Disick, Dane Cook, Derek Jeter, Bruce Willis, Harrison Ford, Tommy Lee, Alec Baldwin, Sean Penn and whoever the president of France is."

Well said, Pete Davidson. Well said, Kate Beckinsale. Better luck next time, David Spade?
