On Saturday, November 7, Joe Biden was declared the projected* winner of the 2020 US presidential election by NBCCNNBBC News, and many other media outlets.

The following day, Katy Perry took to Twitter to tell her fans that she reached out to family members who did not agree with Biden's projected win, and told them she is "here for them". The 36-year-old superstar also encouraged fans to do the same.

Kamala Harris called Joe Biden to congratulate him on his projected election win:

She tweeted: "The first thing I did when the presidency was called is text and call my family members who do not agree and tell them I love them and am here for them. #FamilyFirst. Call your family today. Happy Sunday."

Katy, who had endorsed the Biden and Harris campaign on Instagram back in August, divided fans with her recent post.

"I'm not going to do that because those people voted against my basic human rights, but thanks so much for the tip, Katy!" one Twitter user wrote in response.

"Not extending an olive branch to people who voted against BASIC human decency," wrote another. "Unlike you, I don't have the privilege."

Another said: Your heart is in a good place but this is an extremely privileged take. A reminder to anyone reading this that you do NOT owe kindness or forgiveness to people who try to deny you basic human rights.

"Remember: "I'll respect your opinions if they respect my existence".

Not everyone was so critical of the 'I Kissed A Girl' hitmaker, with one suggesting:

"I think she didn't phrase this well, I think she meant that even if your family doesn't have the same ideology or values about something you have to still love them because they are family after all."

"The tremendous amount of badmouthing and hating on social media, each time someone expresses a view that differs to yours, is incredible," said another.

"Katy can say her thoughts, and absolutely none of anyone's business to say otherwise. You don't tell someone else what comes out their mouth."
