Reality TV star Kylie Jenner has been criticized on social media for saying that she's an expert at social distancing after hiding her pregnancy from the press for eight months.
The trouble began when Jenner took to her Instagram stories on Wednesday, telling her 166 million Instagram followers that she was on "day 8" of social distancing.
Take a look at this segment on why it's important to self-isolate:She wrote on her story: "My pregnancy prepared me for this. I didn't leave the house for months," before later adding: "I hope everyone is feeling well! It's so important right now to self-quarantine to ensure we aren't endangering ourselves or anyone who can't handle this virus."
However, a number of social media users found her comments insensitive and hypocritical, reasoning that it was relatively easy for someone as rich as Jenner to self-isolate, while other people were not so fortunate.
For instance, one Twitter user wrote: "I think it’s funny that celebrities keep sending out “reminders” and “PSAs” about self isolating and social distancing. Sorry Kylie Jenner not everyone is a billionaire who can afford to stay home and not have a source of income. [sic]"
They added: "Follow up: it is a PRIVILEGE to be able self quarantine so don’t shame those who can’t. It’s gross and it shows off the classism in this country. [sic]"
Per The Daily Mail, in a recent appearance on Good Morning America, Surgeon General Jerome Adams appealed to Kylie Jenner and other social media influencers to emphasize the importance of self-isolating on their social media accounts, stating: "I have a 15 and 14 year old and the more I tell them not to do something, the more they want to do it."
He added: "What I really think we need to do was get our influencers - Kevin Durant, Donavan Mitchell, we need to get Kylie Jenner and social media influencers out there, in helping folks understand: this is serious - people are dying out there."
