Lily Allen has revealed the shocking reason why she took her adopted puppy back to the animal shelter.

The 39-year-old singer-songwriter was recently joined by a guest co-host - Welsh TV presenter Steve Jones - during Thursday’s (August 22) episode of her podcast, Miss Me?

During the episode, she excitedly showed her co-host a picture of the Chihuahua mix puppy that she is considering getting with her husband - Stranger Things star David Harbour - and her two daughters, 12-year-old Ethel and 11-year-old Marnie.

The 47-year-old asked the 'Smile' singer and Harbour were prepared for the “commitment” of a pet dog, and she responded by disclosing that she and the Stranger Things actor already adopted a puppy together during the pandemic - but it didn’t exactly go well.

"We actually did adopt a dog already," she told the co-host, before sharing that she took them back to the animal shelter after it ate her children’s passports.

"She ate all three of our passports and they had our visas in. And I cannot tell you how much money it cost me to get everything replaced, because it was Covid so it was just an absolute logistical nightmare," she said, as cited by Buzzfeed.

Allen's daughters were not able to see their father for months after the dog ruined the passports because he lives in the UK, and they live in New York with their mom.

"And because the father of my children lives in England, I couldn't take them back to see their dad for like four months, five months, because this f***ing dog had eaten the passports," she said, adding: "And I just couldn't look at her.

"I was like 'You've ruined my life.'"

The 'LDN' vocalist said that it was not only the incident that led to her decision to return the dog, adding that the pup behaved poorly in general.

“Passports weren’t the only thing she ate, she was a very badly behaved dog and I really tried very hard with her, but it just didn’t work out and the passports were the straw that broke the camel’s back so to speak,” she added.

Fans on social media have since found the Instagram page that was set up for Lily and Harbour's puppy named Mary. The page is followed by the actor and he also appears in some of the photos.

Many people took to the comment section of some of the posts to slam the award-winning singer for her recent comments about pet ownership.

"That poor puppy had a lucky escape. Hopefully, she’s with a family who loves her unconditionally and not the type of family who gets rid of a puppy for chewing," one user blasted.

A second user criticized: "If my dog eats my passport, yes, I will be mad, but I will not abandon her for that. Especially if it's a puppy. A puppy needs to be trained and loved," and a third added: "I certainly hope this dog will be with a proper, devoted family now."

The 'Hard Out Here' musician and the 49-year-old actor first started dating in 2019 and tied the knot in a Las Vegas ceremony in September 2020.

Allen was previously married to Sam Cooper, whom she married in 2011 and divorced in 2018. Cooper is the father to Allen's two daughters.

In the same podcast episode, Allen revealed why she still had her ex-husband's name on her passport, even though she divorced him four years ago.

“I still have my ex-husband’s name because I’ve got two children with the man and it’s hard to travel with children if you haven’t got the same surname,” she shared. “He wasn’t that up for letting me change the kid’s names to ‘Harbour,’ so I’ve kept my ex-husband’s name.”

She then confessed: “David and I have joint bank accounts, and so it’s quite annoying for him to have, you know, me with my Amex Card with my ex-husband’s name on it.”
