Madonna couldn't stay out of the headlines following the Video Music Awards 2026, which took place on Sunday evening (September 27).
The 68-year-old music legend left fans worried following her opening performance alongside Sabrina Carpenter and Charli XCX, where she was seemingly thrown onto a platform.
While the trio performed some tunes from Madonna's latest album, Confessions II, fans worried about her well-being.
But that wasn't all the artist was involved in at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, California, last night.
While accepting an award, the 'Like a Virgin' artist made a joke that referenced her performance, which featured lights beaming out of her dancers' private areas.
Social media users were left shocked after noticing that lasers were coming out of their butts, while Madonna had a spotlight coming out of her nether regions.
Having received 13 nominations, Madonna apparently caught wind of the social media chatter and addressed it while accepting one of her seven VMA trophies.
She first joked about her height, stating that she's "short but I'm not this short," referencing the height of the microphone.
"Don't make me bow down, I've been doing that for too long," she quipped to whoops from the crowd while accepting the win in Best Dance for Confessions II – The Film.
She then joked: "First of all, I just want to get this thing out of my a**," pretending to remove a laser from her behind.
The comment appeared to be a reference to her short film for Confessions II, where the dancers seemingly shot out lasers from their butts, like the performance.
The crowd let out some laughs, as Madonna added: "It's been in here all night, anyway now I can party in the park."
It was one of seven wins for Madonna, which included three during the telecast: Best Collaboration (for 'Bring Your Love' with Sabrina Carpenter), Best Dance, and Artist of the Year.
One social media user wrote: "What in the wide world of demonic Space lasers is this BS.
"On @CBS the opening of the MTV Video Awards with Madonna and dancers with green lasers shooting out of their buttholes."
Another posted: "Moments ago, MTV has Madonna on live TV with laser butt plugs. Who does this type of behavior appeal to other than @manhattanmaker?"
Questions about Madonna's condition arose after her fall during the ceremony, when fans noticed she appeared to be wearing a brace on her knee while accepting her Best Dance album award.
She then made the NSFW joke, and all seemed fine.
The pop star has long been closely linked to the awards show throughout her career, having delivered one of the show's most famous performances when she sang 'Like a Virgin' in a wedding dress at the inaugural event in 1984.
"Most of you were probably not born when I performed at the very first VMAs 43 years ago," the 68-year-old said while accepting the award for artist of the year, which she won over Swift, Carpenter, Bruno Mars, and other stars.
"I spent the last year and a half finding myself, believing in myself and really making the music that I wanted to make," she said.
"My hope for all of you here tonight is that you … do the same. Find yourself and believe in yourself."
