In the short video, the pair can be seen lying in bed - their faces covered by white, red and blue digital makeup, resembling the character recently played by Joaquin Phoenix.

All the while, an audio of the iconic character's laugh can be heard in the background of the peculiar clip.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, a number of social media users expressed their distaste for the unconventional display of PDA.

"This video of Miley Cyrus and Cody Simpson kissing with Joker faces on is terrifying," one person wrote.

"If I can't unsee @CodySimpson and @MileyCyrus making out with Joker face filters neither can you," wrote another, while a third told the couple to "grow up".

Miley and Cody became an item shortly after the 26-year-old former Disney starlet and actor Liam Hemsworth called it quits.

In response to the backlash that the couple received for getting together just months after Miley and Liam ended things, Cody asserted:

"The reason why it hasn't been a really crazy sudden thing is just because we've been friends for so long... [We] found each other again in a space where we're both not partying, working real hard, and it just keeps things healthy and it's good," he told People.

He continued: "I'm very happy. We are very, very happy. She's creative. She's very passionate about what she does, and I'm very similar in that sense. That's why we get along so well. We just have a ball, yeah, and that's the most important part of a relationship, you know?"
