The new documentary Framing Britney Spears has left her heartbroken fans in tears after it explored the dark side of the pop singer's fame.

Framing Britney Spears aired yesterday (February 5) and examined the singer's incredible rise to fame and 2007 breakdown, which resulted in the current battle taking place between the singer and her father over who should control her life.

Britney, 39, is reportedly trying to remove her father Jamie as her conservator – a role he took on in 2008 following her breakdown.

The new film, which was directed by Samantha Stark and produced by the New York Times, appeared on Hulu before being televised on FX that same evening, the Daily Mail reports.

The documentary begins with showing protests and social media posts from the #FreeBritney movement.

An in-person protest is accompanied by the slogan: "What do we want? Free Britney! When do we want it? Now!"

While Britney's father no longer has conservatorship over her "person", he still controls Britney's estate which prevents the Toxic singer from making her own financial decisions.

One Twitter user wrote: "Why am I in tears watching this Britney Spears doc rn, this is so so sad."

Meanwhile, a fifth remarked: "Finished Framing Britney Spears. It's exactly what I wanted it to be, an easy yet precise insight on the situation for people mostly not familiar with conservatorship and what led to it at all. It also reminded me why I fell in love with her in first place. In tears. #FreeBritney"

One of the documentary's interviewees is Jive Records marketing executive Kim Kaiman, who worked with Britney during the early part of her career.

He said of Britney's father Jamie: "The only thing Jamie ever said to me was: "My daughter is going to be so rich she’s going to buy me a boat," That’s all I’m gonna say about Jamie."
