Oprah has been criticised after a controversial interview she conducted with Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen resurfaced.

The clip was filmed in 2004 amid rumors that the twins, then 17, were struggling with an eating disorder.

The talk show host addressed the rumor directly to the sisters, saying: "I know a new rumor [that's] recently surfaced has really upset you, right?"

After this, the girls wait for Oprah to finish asking her question, and she adds: "You know, the one about eating."

It's then that Ashley replies, saying: "Yeah, you know people are going to write what they're going to write. We try not to read the good or the bad because it just comes with the territory.

"Either you're too fat, too skinny and people are just gonna write what they..."

Oprah then interjects and asks: "What size are you, by the way?"

Ashley is clearly taken aback by the question and replies: "Size?"

Mary-Kate then joins in the conversation by explaining that she and her sister have always been "petite", to which Oprah sarcastically says: "Oh, that's so interesting!"

The audience then begins to laugh and the twins smile along.

Oprah adds: "That is so interesting, I'm obsessed with size and you're like, "I really don't know!"'

"If we were obsessed with our size it'd be, I don't know, a different story," Mary-Kate replied, trying to change the subject.

Reacting to the resurfaced interview, one Twitter user wrote: "The nonsense interviewers will ask. It is not ok now and it is wasn't ok back then. Do better."

A second added: "Wow! Was [Oprah] ever called out for this? Inappropriate much?"

A third remarked: "WHAT WE ARE NOT GOING TO DO IS DISCUSS HOW PROBLEMATIC #Oprah IS WITHOUT BRINGING UP THIS VIDEO / they were 18 at the time.. #Oprah asking the olsen twins about their size."

A fourth added: "Oprah should've [sic] been more sensitive to what they were going through, from all the things said abt her own weight ups & downs."

As per the Daily Mail, later that year,  Mary-Kate reportedly checked into rehab to be treated for a battle with anorexia.
